SOUTHERN SECTION BOYS’ BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS : Whittier Christian Holds On to Take Victory

Cathedral High School guard Paul Gonzales’ 10-foot shot from the baseline with eight seconds remaining bounced off the rim, and Whittier Christian held on for a 68-66 victory in a 2-AA playoff game at Cathedral.

Joe Kostantarakis led the Heralds (14-11) with 23 points and 10 rebounds, and Rueben Oronoz (14 points, 19 rebounds) and Dan Long (16 points, 15 rebounds) helped Whittier Christian.

In a 1-A game:

Chadwick 81, Capistrano Valley Christian 64--Dennis Brown scored 22 points to lead Chadwick (18-8) at Capistrano Valley Christian.

Jason Rodarmel scored 22 for Capistrano Valley Christian (9-16). Chadwick led, 35-34, at the half and outscored Capistrano Valley Christian, 23-14, in the third quarter. Rodarmel missed most of the third quarter after picking up his fourth foul early in the second half.

St. Margaret’s 63, Avalon 52--Junior center Ryan Westendorf scored 26 points and had 21 rebounds to lead St. Margaret’s (19-4) at Long Beach Wilson. Dann Campaigne added 13 points and eight assists, and Jeff Hilgers scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for St. Margaret’s. It was St. Margaret’s 16th consecutive victory.
