SPORTSCOPE : Bay Harbor Ice Hockey Team Surprises Eastern Opponents

The Bay Harbor Minor C1 ice hockey team from Harbor City finished second recently in a 14-team Massachusetts youth tournament. The team also played games with area youth teams and a single game in Rhode Island during a weeklong stay in the Northeast. “We showed them our kids do more out here than just surf,” said Coach John Mepham, who said his Eastern counterparts told him they did not expect to see such aggressive skating from a West Coast club.

A soccer coaches licensing course for “D” level certificates in the California Youth Soccer Assn. will be held at El Camino College beginning Saturday. It will conclude March 24. Candidates must take 36 hours of instruction and pass a written exam to obtain a certificate. The course, which meets at 8 a.m. in P.E. Building Room 27, will be conducted under guidelines established by the United States Soccer Federation. The cost is $50 for affiliated members and $55 for others. El Camino College hosts the fourth leg of the five-match South Coast Conference golf tournament Tuesday at Palos Verdes Golf Club. The Warriors (25 points) trail Long Beach City College (36) and Mt. San Antonio (28) in team standings. Cerritos (17) and Pasadena (14) also compete. El Camino’s best finish was a 78 by Archie Uneschi at the Long Beach tournament.

San Pedro Peninsula YMCA’s swim team won the Southern California Championships last week. The event was held at the City of Commerce pool. Three-time Olympic Gold medalist Irina Rodnina of the Soviet Union has signed as a skating coach at the Ice Castle International Training Center in Lake Arrowhead. The Ice Castle is owned by former South Bay businessman Walter Probst and is considered one of the most sophisticated training facilities for figure skaters in the world. Former Olympic Coach Frank Carroll and 1980 Olympic gold medalist Robin Cousins also work there.

An open amateur bodyboarding contest billed as the “South Bay Bodyboarding Championships” will be held Sunday at the Manhattan Beach Pier. Check-in time is 7 a.m. More than $2,000 in prizes will be given away. The golf team at Cal State Dominguez Hills, ranked 20th in the nation, plays in the Southern California Intercollegiate Regional Tournament today and Saturday at Torrey Pines Country Club in La Jolla. A year ago, the Toros were the top Division II team in the event and sixth overall, 24 strokes off the pace set by overall champion USC. However, this year Dominguez Hills will be without last year’s top Division II individual titlist, Enrico Montano, who is recovering from an auto crash last December.

The San Pedro Outlaws, a boys Division 3 team of the American Youth Soccer Organization, won the recent Old Pueblo Invitational Tournament held in Tucson. The Outlaws, coached by Paul Mardesich and Bill Patti, won all six games they played over a three-day period, including a 2-1 victory over defending champion Southwest Tucson. Members of the team are Ryan Albano, Cory Caudle, Joey Danelo, Michael DiMassa, Anthony Gusich, Daniel Kordich, Paul Mardesich, Stacy Martin, Ryan Mills, Chris Salemme, Chris Scanlan, Bobby Scognamillo, Michael Taylor, Eddie Torres and Mirko Vuksic.
