COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Cypress Gets Two in 9th, Stops OCC

Cypress College’s softball team scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning on RBI singles by Laura Corson and Sally Dugas to defeat host Orange Coast College, 5-3, on Friday and take sole possession of first place in the Orange Empire Conference.

Orange Coast (11-2 overall, 2-1 in the conference) scored two runs in the fifth inning to tie the score.

Sally Dugas (5-1) pitched two innings of scoreless relief for Cypress (11-2, 2-0).

In another Orange Empire Conference softball game:

Saddleback 4, Rancho Santiago 0--Denise Kuhns struck out seven in her fourth shutout of the season. Kuhns (6-3-1) gave up only four hits, had three hits of her own and also drove in a run to give Saddleback (7-6-1, 1-0-1) a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

Orange Coast 6, Grossmont 3--Justin Zillman defeated Kelly Askvig, 6-3, 6-3, to lead host Orange Coast (8-0).

In Orange Empire Conference men’s track and field:

Orange Coast 111, Golden West 34--Dave Norville won the 100- and 200-meter dashes in times of 11.0 and 22.4 seconds, respectively, and finished second to teammate Lawrence Hatch in the long jump for OCC (3-0) at Golden West. Hatch, who jumped 21 feet 6 inches in the long jump, jumped a season-high 46-4 to win the triple jump. In Orange Empire Conference women’s track and field:

Orange Coast 120, Golden West 15--Heidi Hasemann jumped 34-3 to set a school record in the triple jump, Olive Lange put the shot a personal-best 35-6 and Ann Kissinger ran a season-best 15.8 in the 100-meter high hurdles for OCC at Golden West.

In Orange Empire Conference men’s swimming:

Orange Coast 90, Cypress 22--Tony Harris won the 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute 48.87 seconds and the 500 free (4:51.49) to lead visiting Orange Coast (2-0) over Cypress (0-3).

Saddleback 63, Riverside 47--Diver Dave Veck won both the one- and three-meter events to lead visiting Saddleback (3-0). Jason Armison won the 200 freestyle (1:51.60) and the 100 freestyle (51.52).

In Orange Empire Conference women’s swimming:

Orange Coast 98, Cypress 37--Orange Coast (2-0) has won 65 consecutive dual meets since 1982.

Saddleback 72, Riverside 63--Peggy Burns won the 100 butterfly (1:10.22) to lead visiting Saddleback (2-1).
