Montgomery High School upset one of the top teams in the nation in its opening game of the Cowboy tournament in Las Vegas, Nev., beating Westlake of Ventura, 5-1.

It was the first loss of the year for Westlake (15-1), ranked No. 1 in California by Cal-Hi Sports and No. 5 in the nation by USA Today.

Montgomery improved to 11-3.

Westlake managed just four hits off Montgomery right-hander Luis Arroyo.

The Aztecs scored their first two runs in the bottom of the first. Saul Rodriguez, who had walked, was trying to make it to third on a single to center by Luis Contreras when the throw from center fielder Rob Neal got by third baseman Todd Preston. Rodriguez scored on the error and Contreras came home later when pitcher Donnie Hill, who backed up the play at third, tried nailing Contreras at third.

The throw missed its mark and Contreras scored.

Montgomery loaded the bases in the fifth, scored one run on a wild pitch and another on a single from Rodriguez.

In other Cowboy tournament games:

Chula Vista 2, Las Vegas 2--Las Vegas tied it in the bottom of the seventh and when the game remained that way two innings later, it was called because of the tournament’s two hour and 15 minute rule. For Chula Vista, Donny Edwards had three hits and both RBIs. He drove in Garland Phillips from third in the first inning and doubled in Ricky Ramirez in the sixth.

Chula Vista moved to 3-9-1, 0-0-1.
