HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Sylmar Triumphs, Makes Playoffs

Sylmar clinched a City Section 4-A Division baseball playoff berth and second place in the East Valley League on Wednesday as the host Spartans overcame a 5-0 first-inning deficit to defeat North Hollywood, 9-5.

Sylmar scored four runs in each of the third and fifth innings behind Dereck Ornelas, who went two for four with a double, scored two runs and drove in two runs. In his past 41 at-bats, Ornelas has 24 hits.

Second baseman Danny Hernandez went three for four and scored two runs for Sylmar (15-7, 9-5 in conference play). North Hollywood is 8-10, 6-9.

Simi Valley 6, Bishop Amat 2--Simi Valley freshman right-hander Bill Treadway (3-2) threw a two-hitter and Joe Gordon moved within one home run of Scott Sharts’ Simi Valley single-season record when he hit his 14th.

Gordon’s solo home run moved him into the state lead.

Poly 1, Grant 0--Senior right-hander Eddie Castellanos improved to 11-0 in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game as Jonathan Campbell drove in the winning run on a two-out single in the sixth.

Birmingham 11, Reseda 5--A nine-run fifth-inning, helped along by two-run singles by Bob Bookatz and Justin Bass, pushed host Birmingham (17-5-1, 11-4) to its 12th consecutive win, a Mid-Valley League victory.

Monroe 2, Van Nuys 0--Monroe (8-9, 6-8) moved closer to clinching second place in the Mid-Valley League behind pitchers Adrian Loverich (6-3) and Sean Henson, who notched his second save.

Westlake 6, Channel Islands 1--James Clark tossed a five-hitter and Mike Eby drove in two runs for Westlake (23-1, 11-0) in a Marmonte League game at Channel Islands (13-11, 3-7).

Bell-Jeff 4, La Salle 3--Richard Silverio stroked a seventh-inning triple to tie the score, then scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Jason Stanley to carry host Bell-Jeff in a San Fernando Valley League game.

Chaminade 4, St. Genevieve 2--Chaminade junior left-hander Greg Galloway (4-1) struck out 12 and allowed two unearned runs.
