PREP ROUNDUP : Doubles Sweep Carries Woodbridge to Pacific Coast League Tennis Title

Woodbridge High School swept the doubles matches and won a singles match to defeat Laguna Beach, 10-8, Wednesday and win the Pacific Coast League boys’ tennis championship.

The doubles teams of Chris Emery and Reza Milforoushan (6-1, 6-1, 6-0), Rajan Saggar and Brett Isaacman (6-1, 6-1, 6-1) and Victor Ro and Darren Isaacman (6-4, 6-1, 6-4) each swept for Woodbridge (16-3, 10-0). Laguna Beach finished second at 8-2.

In Empire League boys’ tennis:

El Dorado 14, Loara 4--Jeff Bailes and Sherman Hsieh swept (6-0, 6-0, 6-3) at No. 1 doubles for host El Dorado (15-5, 8-2).

Esperanza 11, Cypress 7--Esperanza (16-3, 10-0) won the league title at Cypress. Dan Harris and Jim Sewart swept, 6-3, 6-0, 6-3, to lead Esperanza and raise their record to 26-4 in league.

In Garden Grove League boys’ tennis:

La Quinta 12, Kennedy 6--Phillip Lim swept 6-1, 7-5, 6-0, to lead La Quinta (15-4, 13-0) over host Kennedy (16-4, 10-3).

In Orange League boys’ tennis:

Western 13, Magnolia 5--James Yu swept 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, to lead host Western (16-3, 11-3).

Valencia 17, Savanna 1--No. 3 singles player Robert Bae swept (7-5, 6-1, 6-0) for host Valencia (15-0 in league).

In South Coast League boys’ tennis:

El Toro 11, San Clemente 7--El Toro (17-6, 5-4) won three of the last four sets to win the match. El Toro’s No. 2 singles player Shawn Booker defeated San Clemente’s No. 1 Max Wilson, 7-5, to give El Toro a 9-7 lead, and Suri Appa and Aaron Crawford won in doubles to clinch the match. El Toro saved its chances of making the playoffs with the victory.

Mission Viejo 11, Irvine 7--Jeff Holroyd swept, 6-1, 6-1, 6-2, to lead visiting Mission Viejo (12-10, 6-3).

In Olympic League boys’ volleyball:

Santa Margarita 3, Whittier Christian 1--Jason Forman had 13 kills and one block and Jeff Layne had seven kills and seven blocks to lead host Santa Margarita (13-4, 8-3) to a 15-8, 14-16, 15-0, 15-12 victory.

In the Century League individual golf finals:

Canyon’s Steve Greenfield shot 10-over-par 154 at Western Hills to win his second consecutive league title and qualify for the Southern Section individual championship at Mission Hills in Rancho Mirage on May 14. Other qualifiers were: Canyon’s Derek Clare (161) and Dave Miller (162), who a playoff with Doug Pearson of Foothill.

In the Sunset League individual golf finals:

Blake Alban of Marina won with a seven-over par 151 at Los Alamitos Navy Base. Teammate Dan Dalton, who led after the first round on April 16, finished second with 154. Grant Callaghan of Huntington Beach (159) was third, Dave Shiwota of Huntington Beach (159) was fourth, Doug Wilton of Marina (160) was fifth and Scott Gibson of Huntington Beach (161) was sixth. The top six automatically become the All-Sunset league team and the top three advance to Southern Section play.

In the Olympic League track finals:

Kara Theis of Orange Lutheran won the triple jump (34 feet 10 inches) at Fullerton College. Erika Ebel of Orange Lutheran was second (34-3) in the triple jump and Jane Paik of Valley Christian (33-1 1/4) was third. All three will advance to the Southern Section meet.

In the girls’ shot put, Enna Serina of Miraleste was first (33-4 1/2), Charlene Naughton of Santa Margarita (31-4 1/2) was second and Kara Stephens of Orange Lutheran (30-8) was third.
