COMMUNITY COLLEGE TENNIS : Favorites Advance in Orange Empire

There were no upsets in the first day of the Orange Empire Conference men’s individual tennis championships Thursday at Fullerton.
Top-seeded John Swaino of Cypress defeated Larry Casa of Golden West, 6-0, 6-0.
Andy Stewart of Golden West, the second-seeded player, defeated Scott Clark of Saddleback, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
Carl Hinds, the third seed from Saddleback, defeated Dave Moore of Orange Coast, 6-4, 6-2, and fourth-seeded Ilkyung Choi of OCC beat Mike Munoz of Riverside, 6-1, 6-0.
In doubles, top-seeded Hinds and Stan Sanders of Saddleback defeated Peter Feste and Brian Moores of Fullerton, 6-2, 6-1.
Robert Carleton and Swaino of Cypress defeated Eric Giffin and Eric Carleson of Riverside, 6-2, 6-1. Carleton and Swaino won the doubles title at Ojai last weekend.
The quarterfinals and semifinals are today at Fullerton and the finals are Saturday.
In the women’s competition at Cypress:
Gina Garcia, OCC’s top seed won, 6-0, 6-1, and No. 2 Noelle Schmidt of Saddleback won, 6-4, 6-3.
In doubles, Garcia and Iliana Adane of OCC won, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 1 and Schmidt and Lynn Dossey of Saddleback won, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2. The quarterfinals and semifinals are today and the finals Saturday at Cypress.
