Tennis Juniors to Take Best Shots at Seniors

Several outstanding junior tennis players will be encouraged to disrespect their elders today.

The youngsters will play in the one-day Youth vs. Experience tennis tournament, which begins at 10 a.m. at the Los Angeles Tennis Club.

Men and women, aged 55 to 85, will compete against boys and girls in the 10, 12 and 14 age divisions. There will be three singles and one doubles match in each junior division; in all, there will be 18 singles and six doubles matches.

Area juniors who will compete include Rhiannon Potkey, 10, of Ventura, Studio City’s Jessica Kessler, 12, and Shera Wiegler, 12, of West Hills.

One of the top youngsters in the competition is 14-year-old Meilin Tu of Northridge.

Seniors in the competition are or have been ranked No. 1 in their respective divisions of the Southern California Tennis Assn.

Last year, the juniors won the tournament, 13-7.

The event is organized by senior players Pat Yeomans, national junior champion in 1935 and winner of nine national titles, and Bill Lurie, No. 2 in the nation in Men’s 75s.
