Yogi’s Shooters Win Lacrosse Championship

Yogi’s Shooters defeated Los Angeles Lacrosse Club, 13-12, to win the Southern California championship of the California Lacrosse Assn. Sunday at Westchester High in Los Angeles.

Russ Olsen had four goals, Bruce Seitz three and Matt Holman two for Yogi’s, which won the Southern California championship for the first time since 1979. Yogi’s (12-1) will try for its first state title Saturday at Menlo College.

Tony Clark and Brent Noon will be named the San Diego Press Club’s co-athletes of the year at a Salute to High School Sports luncheon Thursday at the Stardust Hotel.

Clark, of Christian High, was The Times player of the year in boys’ basketball. He is the section record holder for points in a season and led the county in scoring for the second consecutive year. In baseball, he led the county in home runs as a junior and is second this year with 11.

Noon, of Fallbrook High, is the section record holder in the shot put and discus. He will be going for his fourth section shot title and third discus Saturday.

Other athletes to be honored by the press club are: O.J. Hall and Markeith Ross of Rancho Buena Vista, Jerome Price (University City), Rob Ippolito (Helix), Christina Adams (Grossmont), Tyeast Brown (Point Loma), Patty Villarreal (La Jolla), Sara Hallock (Mira Mesa), Terry Vaughn (Oceanside), Danny White (Point Loma), Leta Lindley (Carlsbad), Chris Riley (Madison), Tasha Taylor (Torrey Pines), Manny Rodriguez (San Diego), Nikki Gannon (San Pasqual), Mike Picotte (Mira Mesa), Alison Terry (USDHS), Tom Mitchell (Coronado) and Dareke Fleming (Mission Bay).

Retiring coaches Lee Trepanier (Point Loma girls’ basketball) and Gene Edwards (La Jolla football and golf) will be honored as well.
