Quarterbacks Highlight Roster

Quarterbacks Santiago Alvarez of Franklin High and Chris Bisgaard of Flintridge Prep will play for the Glendale-area team in the Glendale-Burbank All-Star Football Game on June 30 at La Canada High.

Alvarez, the City Section 3-A Division Player of the Year, passed for a state-record 54 touchdowns last season and led Franklin to its second consecutive City championship.

Bisgaard, player of the year in the Southern Section Small Schools Division, led Flintridge Prep to its first Southern Section title.

Other local players selected to the 36-man Glendale roster include wide receivers Aaron Erickson of Crescenta Valley, Bernardo Gallo of Franklin and David Swayne of Flintridge Prep; running back Paul Traughber and kicker Ross Allan of La Canada; defensive back Kevin Hurley of St. Francis; and quarterback Carlos Gutierrez, running back Rumeal Carter and wide receiver Miguel Osorio of Marshall.

Non-contact practices will begin Saturday.

Going out on top: A week after placing second in the 3,200 meters at the state track and field championships, Eliazar Herrera of Hoover concluded his senior season with a victory in the 3,000 meters at the Golden West Invitational last Saturday at Cal State Sacramento.

Herrera, bound for UCLA, overtook Brandon Rhoads of Provo, Utah, on the final straightaway to win in 8 minutes 27.9 seconds. Rhoads was second in 8:28.5, followed by Obed Aguirre of San Fernando in 8:31.1.

“I didn’t know what to expect,” said Herrera, who eclipsed his personal best of 8:43.55, set in March at the Alemany Relays. “It’s not often that I outkick somebody. It was a big surprise.”

Updates: Former Glendale College left-hander Wally Ritchie is 3-0 with a 2.60 earned-run average for the Scranton-Wilkes-Barre Red Barons, the Philadelphia Phillies’ affiliate in the triple-A American Assn.

Former St. Francis High catcher Greg Zaun is batting .132 with a home run and seven runs batted in 34 games for the Wausau Timbers, the Baltimore Orioles’ affiliate in the Class-A Midwest League.

Honor roll: Heather Beach and Tony Ferguson have been honored as Occidental College’s Scholar Athletes of the Year.

Beach, who played volleyball and competed in track and field, majored in economics. She competed in the NCAA Division III national track meet three consecutive seasons and was an All-American triple jumper this year.

Ferguson, who played football, was a biology major. A second-team All-Southern California Collegiate Athletic Assn. defensive lineman, Ferguson will attend Tufts University School of Medicine in the fall.

Sixty senior athletes with grade-point averages of 3.2 or higher were honored last weekend at an awards dinner at Occidental.

Grand opening: The Rose Bowl Aquatics Center, located next to the football stadium, will open Saturday with a community water festival featuring a triathlon, children’s and masters’ meets, a local high school all-star water polo match, diving and synchronized swimming exhibitions, and demonstrations of specialized programs--including swim lessons for beginners and rehabilitation programs for the physically impaired.

Forward march: Yolanda Davidian of La Canada High has committed to play basketball for Pierce College next season, Pierce Coach Rob Dimuro said. Davidian, a 5-foot-9 forward, averaged 15 points a game and was an All-Glendale-area selection by The Times last season.

On course: Dan Jennings of St. Francis shot a 14-over-par 156 to finish 12th at the CIF-Southern California Golf Assn. championships Monday.

Jennings, a senior who will attend Arizona, shot 75-81 in the one-day tournament that featured 75 players from the Southern, Central, San Diego and City sections at El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana.

Austin Maki of Estancia High was the individual champion, shooting 148 and defeating Jason Gore of Hart in a playoff.

Glendale sophomore Clarissa Childs and Eagle Rock junior Leanne Wong tied for 12th in the girls’ competition at 17-over-par 88 for 18 holes.
