The boys’ basketball teams at La Canada and Crescenta Valley highs have advanced to the round of 16 in the 128-team L. A. Games tournament.

La Canada will play Morningside at L. A. Jordan High and Crescenta Valley will play Manual Arts at El Camino College on Saturday. Both games begin at noon.

Last weekend, La Canada defeated Dorsey, 50-43, Bell Gardens, 55-47, and Taft, 73-66.

Crescenta Valley beat San Fernando, 60-38, Walnut, 51-39, and Canyon, 47-46.

The La Canada girls edged Costa Mesa, 28-25, in the first round before falling to Torrance, 31-27.

In water polo, Glendale advanced to the final 16 before losing to San Gorgonio, 11-5.

New coach: Kathy Pudelko has been named the women’s basketball coach at Glendale College.

Pudelko, who spent the last two seasons as a graduate assistant at Cal State Northridge, succeeds interim Coach Lee Balkin.

Pudelko coached at Agoura from 1985-87 and coached Snake River High in Baggs, Wyo., to the state 1-A Division basketball championship in 1982.

She is completing a Master’s degree in physical education at CSUN. She graduated in 1978 from Northern Colorado, where she played volleyball.

Correction: It was incorrectly reported in this space last week that Bruce Man-Son-Hing of Glendale defeated Don Issak of Los Angeles, 6-3, 6-0, in the semifinals of the Southern California Public Parks tennis tournament.

Actually, Man-Son-Hing beat Issak in the final to win the tournament.

Man-Son-Hing, 26, graduated from Glendale High and played tennis at UC Irvine before playing on the professional tour for three years.

Bound for China: Bruce Jacobson and Stephen Finch of Crescenta Valley and Sean Whiting, Jeff Lord and Louie Nieto of La Canada are among the athletes who will travel to China in August as part of an International Sports Exchange basketball team.
