Muir, Arcadia, Glendora and Wilson high schools each had four players named to compete in the 11th annual Hall of Fame All-Star Football Game July 20 at Citrus College in Glendora.

Muir, which tied Santa Barbara for the Southern Section Division II championship, placed linebackers Paul Joiner and Reggie Hunt and defensive backs Stephan Crutchfield and Sam Williford on the West team. Arcadia’s players named to the West team were linebacker Ellison Kim, safety Pete Muro, defensive end Mike Gassner and quarterback Gino Aluzzi.

Glendora, which tied Ramona for the Division IV title, had quarterback J. J. O’Laughlin, lineman Jason Tibbetts, defensive back Phil McGee and linebacker Steve Jones named to the East squad. Wilson had quarterback Ryan Merrill, defensive end John Rafols, defensive back Malcolm Thomas and wide receiver Eric Olson named to the East team.

Jim Brownfield, chairman of the game, said the East appears to have an early advantage because of its speed and size.

Top players in the skill positions for the East include running backs Marshawn Thompson of Bassett, Marcus Green of Northview and Greg Greene of Garey, wide receiver Duane Williams of Baldwin Park, quarterback Chad May of Damien and defensive backs Jimmy Hunter of Nogales and Curtis Robinson of Pomona.

Thompson, a 6-foot-1, 195-pound fullback, rushed for a state-leading 2,294 yards and 30 touchdowns last season and finished with 4,254 yards rushing in his high school career.

With May, O’Laughlin and Merrill, the East is also deep and talented at quarterback. O’Laughlin, headed for the University of Illinois in the fall, passed for 1,706 yards and nine touchdowns and rushed for 284 yards and 11 touchdowns last season.

Among the top interior linemen for the East are Norberto Garrido of Workman, Joe Patterson of Bishop Amat, Mike Collins of Los Altos and Hessley Hempstead of Upland. The biggest player on either squad is the 6-7, 280-pound Garrido, an All-Southern Section selection who will attend USC.

The West is expected to be led by linemen Robert Montoya of Alhambra, Brian Johnson of Blair and Bernard Dixon of Pasadena, running back Darren MacLellan of Arroyo and defensive backs Chris Liu of Temple City and Keven Shanahan of San Marino.

MacLellan was one of the top offensive players in the valley last season, rushing for 1,333 yards and 21 touchdowns and catching 15 passes for 218 yards. He also made six interceptions as a defensive back. Liu was the valley leader in interceptions with nine.

The West team will be coached by Temple City’s Jim Walker, who directed the Rams to the Division VII semifinals for the second year in a row and a 9-4 record. The East coach is Dean Karnoski, who guided Glendora to a share of its first Division IV championship and a 12-1-1 record--best in school history.

Practice for both teams starts Monday. The West will practice at Temple City and the East at Glendora.

Four members of the Pomona-based Casa Colina Condors wheelchair basketball team have been selected to play for the U.S. National team in the fifth Gold Cup World Wheelchair Basketball Championship Aug. 5-12 in Belgium.

The players, chosen by the National Wheelchair Basketball Assn., are Dave Kiley, Jim Miller, Al Campos and Mike Schlappi. It will be the fifth time that Kiley, a San Dimas resident, has played in the Gold Cup.

The U.S. squad is seeded first in the 12-team tournament.
