TENNIS
Three La Jolla High School players won age-division finals Friday in the 74th La Jolla Tennis Championships at the La Jolla Tennis Club.
Second-seeded Jimmy Brown defeated No. 5 Willie Carter of Vista, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6, to take the boys’ 18s singles title. San Diego’s James Conda, No. 2 and Brown’s teammate and doubles partner, won the 16s with a 3-6, 6-0, 6-1 victory against top-seeded Joseph Barbarie of San Diego. Brown and Conda later teammed to win the 18s doubles championship in straight sets. They defeated Barbarie and Carter, 6-1, 6-1.
Top-seeded Lynn Coakley, also of La Jolla High, sailed to the girls’ 18s singles championship with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over San Diego’s Jennifer Rozsa, who was unseeded.
Other San Diego winners in singles were second-seeded Will Nelson of Fallbrook, boys’ 10s winner over top-seeded Raphael Phurber of San Clemente, No. 1 Vannessa Rooks of Spring Valley, winner in girls 16s, and No. 1 Gee Gee Garvin of Vista, the champion in girls 12s.
Semifinals in the open and senior divisions begin today at 9 a.m. Finals are Sunday.
BASEBALL
The 12th National Sports Collectors Convention will be held July 4-7, 1991 at the Anaheim Convention Center.
Baseball Hobby News, a San Diego-based national publication, presented a bid for the convention to a national collector board in Arlington, Texas, but the bid was awarded to Anaheim.
SURFING
The Life’s A Beach Surf Tournament will begin in Oceanside a day earlier due to the participation of 300 surfers, the largest number of contestants for a World Tour event this year.
Competition for the $112,500 event, scheduled to begin Monday, will start Sunday and run through July 15. Pre-trials begin at 7 a.m. at the South Side of Oceanside Pier.
