SPORTSCOPE : Tennis Championships Will Start Saturday in Glendora

Many of the top amateur players in Southern California will compete in the 29th annual Glendora Tennis Championships starting at 8 a.m. Saturday at four sites in Glendora.

The tournament, which has drawn 923 entries, will run through Aug. 5 at Glendora High, Citrus College and Dawson and Goddard parks. Open-division players will be competing for $2,500 in prize money.

Defending champion Helen Park-Bates of Pasadena is the top-seeded women’s open player and contenders include Julie Slattery of Cal Poly Pomona and Veronica Pasley of Pasadena.

Seeded No. 1 in the men’s open division is defending champion Mitchell Bridge of Huntington Beach. His strongest challenges are expected to come from Stephen Aniston of Corona and Bruce Man Son Hing of Glendale.

In the junior divisions, the Valley’s best hope could be Leonard Lee of San Marino. He will be competing against Erik Mateljan of Redlands and Jeff Gothard of La Habra. Girls juniors to watch include Alison Paris of Calabasas and Kimmie Ouchi of Hawaii.

There is no charge for admission. The tournament is sanctioned by the United States Tennis Assn.

Sami Nedjar, co-coach of the Occidental College women’s soccer team last season and an assistant the year before, has been named head coach of the team, succeeding Sue Semrau.

Nedjar had been sharing duties with Semrau, who is also women’s basketball coach at the school.

Nedjar, a USC graduate, has also coached the boys’ soccer team at Oceanside High and the women’s soccer club at USC.
