Train Strikes, Severs Feet of Man on Tracks in Simi Valley Tunnel

A man was severely injured when he was struck by a train Tuesday night in Simi Valley, officials said.

The victim, whose identity was not known, had both feet severed at the ankles, authorities said.

The accident occurred in a Southern Pacific train tunnel in the east end of Simi Valley, but there were conflicting reports of events leading up to the accident.

“The victim had been on the ground with both ankles across the tracks,” Lisa Hines, a dispatcher with the Ventura County Fire Department, said. “The engineer attempted to stop but couldn’t.”

Los Angeles city fire officials reported that the man was riding a bicycle through the tunnel and was struck when he tried to beat the train.

The victim, who appeared to be in his 20s, was airlifted to Northridge Hospital Medical Center.
