The Louisiana Superdome’s general manager said today that the stadium will bid to become the first indoor site for soccer’s World Cup.

Bob Johnson said the 70,000-seat stadium, host to four Super Bowls and two NCAA Final Fours, probably will bid for either the final, the opening game or a semifinal in addition to first-round matches.

The tournament, the first to be played in the United States, will be held in eight to 12 cities in June and July, 1994. Cities will be selected next year by soccer’s world governing body, FIFA.

“At this point our intentions are to bid,” Johnson said. He said the problem of installing grass over the artificial turf could be overcome.

Twenty-seven cities, including Los Angeles and Pasadena, have indicated that they will bid for games by the Dec. 14 deadline. Berlin said Denver’s Mile High Stadium probably will join the list.
