Woodbridge Plays Host to Runners Saturday

More than 3,000 cross-country runners from 108 high schools will compete Saturday at the Woodbridge Invitational at Woodbridge High School.

The meet, sponsored in part by the Newport/Irvine Rotary Club, is the largest in Orange County and one of the largest in California.

Local schools scheduled to compete include Capistrano Valley, Century, Corona del Mar, El Toro, Foothill, Katella, Laguna Beach, Laguna Hills, Mater Dei, Newport Harbor, Orange, Saddleback, San Clemente, Tustin and University.

Other schools include Agoura, whose girls’ team features Deena Drossin, a two-time state cross-country champion and the fastest returning runner in the nation at 3,200 meters.

Races for large- and medium-division schools will begin at 7:45 a.m. and conclude about noon. Small schools competition will run from 3 to 6 p.m.
