SDSU Men Beat Northridge in Overtime

The San Diego State men’s soccer team defeated Cal State Northridge, 1-0, in overtime Friday night at Aztec Bowl.

Greg Sipola scored the game-winner with three minutes remaining in overtime, knocking the ball in with his right foot of a corner kick from about five feet out. After Sipola scored, the Cal State Northridege goalie received a yellow card for yelling at the referee, who also heard an earful from the Northridge coaches after the game.

Curtis McAlister, SDSU’s goalie, picked up his first shutout of the season, making four saves on 13 shots.

SDSU is 4-1.

USD outshot Washington, 17-7, but ran out of time and played to a 0-0 tie after two overtimes at USD. Goalkeeper Rols Norton had seven saves for 20th-ranked Washington (3-0-3). USD is 3-0-2.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine defeated visiting University of San Diego, 7-15, 15-8, 15-9, 15-10. Nikki Wallace led USD (4-6). UCI improved to 8-4.

UCSD rolled through first-day pool play in the La Verne Invitational.

The Tritons defeated host La Verne 15-9, 15-13, 15-8, and followed with victories over two teams from Pennsylvania. UCSD defeated Juniata 12-15, 15-9, 15-7, 15-6, and Elizabethtown 15-3, 15-10, 15-5.

Dana Simone led the Tritons with 21 kills in the three matches.

The tournament concludes today with UCSD (12-2) facing Grand Canyon College and Westmont College. Westmont defeated UCSD earlier this season.

Point Loma Nazarene advanced to today’s championship round after winning two of its three matches on the first day of the West Coast Challenge at Cal Baptist. After losing to Texas Wesleyan, 15-10, 15-4, PLNC defeated Cal Baptist, which it will meet in the finals, 15-5, 15-4.

In that victory, Jamie Wheat had four aces, LeAnn Lopez had 20 assists and Roberta Simpson had six kills for PLNC.

The Crusaders then defeated Bethany Bible, 15-6, 15-2, led by Janelle Dutton with three aces, Natalie Bahr with five kills and Lopez had 19 assists.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Heidi Walters scored on an assist from Carmen Delgado with 20 minutes left to give San Diego State a 1-0 victory over host UC San Diego. SDSU is 1-2, UCSD 2-1.

SAILING

Dennis Conner announced Bruce Nelson has joined his America’s Cup syndicate as the third and final principal designer. Team Dennis Conner’s other two designers are David Pedrick and Albert Calderon. Nelson was a principal designer of Stars & Stripes in 1987 and 1988.
