Anemic Offense Plagues CLU in Loss to St. Mary’s

Junior quarterback Scott Wood passed for three touchdowns and ran for another Saturday to lead St. Mary’s past Cal Lutheran, 34-12, in a nonconference football game in Moraga, Calif.

St. Mary’s limited Cal Lutheran to 156 yards, and the Gaels amassed 304. Wood completed 11 of 17 passes for 145 yards, and St. Mary’s passed for 228 yards.

Cal Lutheran (0-3) avoided a shutout when Chris Sestito returned an interception 42 yards for a score in the third quarter. Cal Lutheran halfback Jay Weber (14 carries for 53 yards) added a three-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Cal Lutheran quarterback Cassidy O’Sullivan completed six of 14 for 69 yards.

Senior split end Brian Sexton caught touchdown passes of 14 and 15 yards as St. Mary’s (3-1) scored 17 first-quarter points. Sexton had seven catches to become the second St. Mary’s player to catch more than 100 passes in a career.

Wood’s one-yard run and Mike Estrella’s two field goals gave the Gaels a 27-0 halftime lead. St. Mary’s extended its lead to 34-0 when Jason Sol caught a six-yard toss from Wood midway through the third quarter.
