WAC ROUNDUP : McGwire Leads Aztecs Past Air Force, 48-18

Dan McGwire passed for three touchdowns and 322 yards, and San Diego State recovered six fumbles and blocked one punt in a 48-18 victory over the Air Force Academy Saturday night in a Western Athletic Conference game at San Diego.

Amid McGwire’s 18 completions in 27 attempts were touchdown pass plays of 71 and 56 yards.

Damon Pieri recovered two fumbles to lead the Aztecs as they converted Air Force mistakes into 31 points.

San Diego State improved to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the WAC. The Falcons are 2-3 and 1-3.

Jarvis Baker, making his first start at quarterback for Air Force, ran for 116 yards in 29 carries, but completed only two of seven passes for 21 yards.

The Aztecs, who held a 24-3 halftime lead, opened the third-quarter scoring with a three-yard run by Curtis Butts, his second touchdown of the game.

McGwire added a 56-yard touchdown pass to Patrick Rowe and a three-yard scoring strike to Dennis Arey, giving San Diego State a 45-3 edge late in the third quarter.

The Falcons’ touchdowns came late in the third quarter on a 23-yard run by Jason Jones, and on a three-yard run by Chris Gray with 34 seconds left.

After recovering an onside kick, Air Force got a 37-yard field goal by Joe Wood as time expired.

Starting the scoring, McGwire hit on his 71-yard pass play to Arey after Eric Duncan recovered a fumble by Baker at the San Diego six, ending the opening drive that had gone that 75 yards in 14 plays.

On the Falcons’ next possession, halfback DeShawn Durham bobbled a pitch from Baker. Andy Coviello took the ball in mid-air and returned the fumble 42 yards for a touchdown.

Wyoming 28, Utah 10--Wyoming reserve running back Dwight Driver ran for two touchdowns as the Cowboys (5-0, 2-0) rallied for a victory at Salt Lake City.

The Utes held a 10-7 lead at halftime, but Wyoming scored three second-half touchdowns, including two in the final 5:26 of the game.

Utah, losing its third consecutive game at home, dropped to 2-3 and 0-2.

Driver, a junior starting in place of injured senior Jay Daffer, rushed for Wyoming’s first and last touchdowns, gaining 91 yards in the process.
