Game at El Camino Now Saturday at 2

Officials at El Camino and Oceanside high schools and the Oceanside Unified School District agreed Wednesday to move this week’s football game between the rivals to 2 p.m. Saturday at El Camino instead of 7 p.m. Friday.

The decision came in the wake of Monday’s drive-by shooting in which Michele Tate, a 14-year-old freshman at El Camino, was killed.

School district spokesman Dan Armstrong said the Oceanside Police Dept. has said the incident was related to gangs, not school, but that they don’t want the game to be a stage for more violence.

“It’s not a school situation,” Armstrong said. “It’s a neighborhood situation, but we’re doing everything we can to ensure it doesn’t spill onto the schools.

“On the night of the biggest sporting event of the year--the spotlight event for the entire community--we’re concerned about the possibility that someone might want to make a name or some kind of statement in front of a lot of people.”

Armstrong said security at the game will be doubled.
