Late Goal From Adair Lifts USD Past Cal, 2-1

Charles Adair, a sophomore transfer from San Diego State, scored with 4 minutes 8 seconds remaining to lift the University of San Diego men’s soccer team to a 2-1 nonconference victory over Cal Wednesday at USD.

USD (7-1-4) returned to its winning ways after losing for the first time Friday, 2-0, to San Francisco, which snapped the Toreros’ 13-match unbeaten streak dating back to last season.

USD’s Paul Gelvezon opened the scoring at 1:49 with his eighth goal on assists from Leo Ronces and goalie Tom Tate, who made a long outlet pass.

At 66:48, Cal’s Tom Barker scored with Paul Woodring getting the assist. Adair’s winner, his first goal, came off an assist by Ronces.

Andy Morrene scored two first-half goals to lead San Diego State past Biola, 4-0, in a nonconference match at SDSU. Shane Hickson and Pat Merrell scored the other goals for SDSU (7-4-1). Curtis McAlister and Chris Volk combined to shut out Biola (6-5-1).

Point Loma Nazarene scored a come-from-behind, 3-2 Golden State Athletic Conference victory over Cal Baptist in Riverside. Trailing, 2-1, Todd Bernard scored with an assist from Mark Vogel with 10 minutes left, and Robert Romero scored off a pass from Steve Cokkinis with 5:00 to go. Cokkinis scored the Crusaders’ first goal. Cal Baptist fell to 2-9-1, 0-2. Saturday, PLNC (4-3-1, 2-0) plays host to Westmont, ranked fourth in the NAIA.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Dawn Evans scored in the 65th minute to give UC Irvine a 1-0 nonconference victory over USIU. UC Irvine (5-5-1) set school records with its fifth consecutive victory and its fifth consecutive shutout.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Setter Shannon Mutch had 47 assists and 19 digs to lead USD over U.S. International, 15-9, 15-12, 15-9, at the M. Larry Lawrence Jewish Community Center. Andrea Bruns had 16 kills for USD (7-10). USIU (5-13) was led by Heather Kelley with 18 kills.

UC San Diego, the top-ranked NCAA Division III team, had little trouble defeating Biola, 15-7, 15-3, 15-4, in a nonconference match in La Jolla. Vikki Van Duyne had 10 kills and Elizabeth Tan seven for UCSD, which improved to 20-4.

Freshman setter Julie Fabian, making her first college start in place of injured starter Amy Banachowski, had 32 assists. Biola fell to 8-10.
