ROUNDUP : Taft Boys’, Girls’ Teams Claim Titles in Northwest Valley Cross-Country

The Taft High boys’ cross-country team, the defending City Section champion, showed no signs of letting up in 1990 as it ran away with the team title in the Northwest Valley Conference Classic on Thursday at Pierce College.

Brian Godsey and Torino Carr, both of Taft, covered the course in 16 minutes 35 seconds to place first and second.

Taft finished with 20 points and San Fernando was second with 76.

The Taft girls’ team also won, accumulating 58 points to second-place Kennedy’s 65.

Jennie Armenta of Kennedy took top honors with a time of 20:44.

In other boys’ cross-country competition:

Hart 16, Burbank 47--Four Hart runners crossed the line together in 17:33 in a Foothill League meet at Griffith Park.

Hector Chavez, Paul De La Cerda, Keith Grossman and Gavin Klinger were awarded first through fourth, respectively, for Hart (2-0 in league competition).

In other girls’ cross-country competition:

Channel Islands 21, Newbury Park 38; Channel Islands 22, Thousand Oaks 38; Thousand Oaks 27, Newbury Park 28--Channel Islands held out its top runners, Veronica Barajas and Stephanie Reed, in preparation for the Stanford Invitational on Saturday, but the Raiders still placed five runners among the top nine in the Marmonte League double-dual meet at Peppertree Park in Newbury Park. Channel Islands is ranked seventh in the Southern Section Division I poll.

The Raiders’ Valerie Aceves won the race in 20:07, 13 seconds ahead of runner-up Stacey Auer of Thousand Oaks.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Westmont 5, Cal Lutheran 3--Rachel Wackerman scored her 13th and 14th goals of the season to break the Cal Lutheran record of 12 held by Vanessa Martin, but the Regals (5-3, 0-1) blew a pair of two-goal leads in a District 3 match at Westmont.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Thousand Oaks d. Camarillo, 15-7, 15-1, 15-4--Cindy McKinnon had five kills and six service aces for visiting Thousand Oaks (9-1, 6-0 in Marmonte League play.)

Saugus d. Quartz Hill, 15-8, 15-11, 15-11--Lindsay Estes had 12 kills and teammates Jeannie Lane and Stacy Wagoner each added six kills for host Saugus (4-4, 2-0) in a Golden League match.

Alemany d. St. Bernard, 15-12, 15-1, 15-9--Jennifer Glenn racked up seven kills and served for 13 points to pace Alemany (5-5, 1-1) in a Mission League match at St. Bernard.

Royal d. Agoura, 15-5, 15-12, 15-6--Jennifer Hamilton had eight kills and teammates Becky Campbell and Wende Brown each added seven for Royal (7-1, 5-1) in a Marmonte League match at Agoura.

Taft d. Kennedy, 15-8, 15-1, 15-3--Taft’s Sarah White had 13 kills for visiting Taft (4-1, 1-1) in a Northwest Valley League match.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Royal 19, Irvine University 3--Mike Radka and Jack Kocur each scored five goals and Brent Hooker added four for Royal (8-3) in a first-round match of the San Luis Obispo Invitational.

Crespi 18, St. Francis 4--Rusty King and T. J. Green each scored three goals in a San Fernando Valley League match at Woodcrest Pool. Crespi is 12-1, 1-1.

Thousand Oaks 8, Westlake 5--Chuck Scherrei had four goals and an assist for visiting Thousand Oaks in a Marmonte League match.
