PREP ROUNDUP : Tustin Downs Sailors in Volleyball

Christine Garner had 17 kills to lead Tustin High School to a five-game victory over Newport Harbor in a Sea View League girls’ volleyball match Thursday at Tustin.

It was the first victory for Tustin, the eighth-ranked team in the Orange County coaches’ poll, over No. 5 Newport Harbor. Tustin won the first two games, 15-10, 15-4, then Newport railled to win, 15-10, 15-9, but the Tillers took the final game, 16-14.

Teri Doran had 39 assists for Tustin. Newport Harbor was led by Tara Kroesch, who had 30 kills.

In another Sea View League match:

Corona del Mar 3, University 0--Lara Carlsen and Charmayne Conley each had eight kills to lead visiting Corona del Mar (13-1, 4-0) to a 15-5, 15-8, 15-3 victory.

In the Century League:

El Modena 3, Canyon 0--Marni Hichborn had 21 kills and six blocks and Melizza Benitez had 32 assists to lead host El Modena (10-0, 4-0) to a 15-9, 15-3, 15-3 victory.

In the Garden Grove League:

Rancho Alamitos 3, Bolsa Grande 2--Adriana Ramirez had 14 kills to lead Rancho Alamitos to a 15-12, 15-12, 10-15, 6-15, 15-13 victory.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Beach 3, Costa Mesa 0--Ann Swayne had six kills to lead visiting Laguna Beach to a 15-5, 15-0, 15-9 victory at Costa Mesa.

In the South Coast League:

Dana Hills 3, Mission Viejo 0--Shannan Meixsell had 14 kills as the Dolphins (1-6, 1-3) swept, 15-1, 15-12, 15-5, at Dana Hills.

El Toro 3, San Clemente 0--Wendy Balut had 11 kills and Jaime Smith had 12 kills to lead host El Toro (8-3, 3-1) to a 15-1, 15-4, 15-8 victory.

In the Sunset League:

Edison 3, Huntington Beach 0--Debbie Howard had 15 kills, nine digs and nine blocks to lead host Edison (6-5, 4-3) to a 15-4, 15-6, 15-8 victory.

In nonleague play:

Liberty Christian 3, Tri-City Christian 0--Laura Cordero had eight kills to lead visiting Liberty Christian (8-1) to a 15-8, 17-15, 15-11 victory at Tri-City Christian in San Diego.

In Century League water polo:

Canyon 10, Orange 8--Clay Kaytis and Dave Casa each had five goals for host Canyon (15-7, 1-1).

In the Empire League:

Esperanza 17, Loara 0--Mark Campagna scored six goals, Scott Aldrich scored three and Craig Thomas had seven saves for visiting Esperanza (6-6, 1-1).

In the Freeway League:

Sonora 11, Fullerton 6--Kevin Fleet had three goals and Mike Sheldon had seven saves to lead Sonora, which improved to 2-0 in league. Matt Swan had three goals for Fullerton.

In the Orange League:

Brea-Olinda 13, Magnolia 12--Jason Bird, Bryan Noyes and Scott Kling each scored three goals for visiting Brea-Olinda (14-4, 3-0). Brea-Olinda trailed, 7-6, at halftime, but the Wildcats outscored Magnolia (4-9, 1-2), 4-1, in the third quarter.

Valencia 7, Western 1--Ryan Engstrom scored two goals for visiting Valencia (8-5, 3-0).

In the Sea View League:

Tustin 5, Saddleback 2--Damen Hannaman and Pat Collins each had two goals for host Tustin (10-4, 1-1), which led, 4-1, at the half.

In the South Coast League:

El Toro 10, Irvine 6--El Toro’s J.P. Mathot and Andy McIntyre each had four goals. Curt Bowman had four for host Irvine.

In Olympic League girls’ tennis:

Orange Lutheran 9, Valley Christian 9 (Orange Lutheran wins on games, 79-73)--Jennifer Bodourian swept, 6-3, 6-0, 6-0, to lead Orange Lutheran at Valley Christian.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Estancia 10, Laguna Hills 8--Christina Grigaitis and Lauren Weaver swept, 6-0, 6-0, 6-1, to lead host Estancia.

In the Sea View League:

Corona del Mar 13, University 5--In a match between the league’s top teams, Corona del Mar was led by its top doubles team of Michelle McFarland and Erica Anahood, who swept, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0. University’s Jeannette Fylpaa swept, 6-2, 6-3, 6-1.

In the Sunset League:

Fountain Valley 18, Ocean View 0--Michelle Berkowitz won, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, to improve to 9-0 in sets this week. She is 35-4 for the season.

Marina 14, Santa Ana 4--Tricia Dillenbeck swept, 6-1, 6-0, 6-2; Holly Meyers swept, 6-2, 6-0, 6-1, and Maria Chavez swept, 6-1, 6-0, 6-2, to lead host Marina (9-4-1, 5-3).
