Barnum, Alemany Use Tried and True Method

Share

Same place. Same thing.

Every one of Terry Barnum’s school-record six touchdowns for Alemany High on Friday in a 41-7 win over Chaminade resulted from the same play: a basic off-tackle run.

Four of the runs came on a play called “power right.” The Indians really mixed things up on the other two scores by calling “power left.”

“We keep it simple,” said Pat Blackburn, Alemany’s coach.

On the prolific play, Barnum takes a handoff from quarterback Adam Romandi and makes a decision.

“I cut up if there is a hole off tackle or I bounce outside if the defensive end collapses inside,” Barnum said.

Against Chaminade, Barnum raced outside defenders on the first five scores and cut up off-tackle on the final touchdown, which was his second run of 62 yards. Barnum, a junior, gained 258 yards in the game, breaking a school record previously held by Art Golden, who rushed for 221 yards in a game in 1963. Golden and Barnum now share the school record for most touchdowns in a game.

Passing: Westlake quarterback Todd Preston, who holds 12 school records, has passed for 4,536 yards in 28 games. He has thrown for 1,355 yards this season and needs an additional 1,053 to break into the Southern Section’s top-10 all-time list. . . . Preston threw for 327 yards against Channel Islands last week and broke Brad Gossen’s school record of 311, set in 1985 against Palos Verdes.

Hart quarterback Ryan Connors completed five of five fourth-down passes to keep Indian scoring drives alive in a 35-6 victory over Alhambra. Connors completed 25 of 47 passes for a career-high 296 yards and three touchdowns.

Scoring: With 124 points, Glendale’s Pathon Rucker is 52 ahead of anyone in the area. Running back Kent Dahn of Harvard has 72 points and Fillmore’s Tory Cabral, who plays running back and kicker, has 71.

Defense: Keyed by the play of inside linebackers Damon Tice and Alex Sawatzke, the Kennedy defense has allowed four touchdowns and an average of 139.8 yards in five games.

In last week’s 34-13 victory over Chatsworth, the pair were overwhelming in helping limit Chatsworth to 73 rushing yards.

Sawatzke, a 6-foot-1, 210-pound junior, was credited with 10 solo tackles and 10 assists. Tice, a 6-foot, 220-pound senior, had seven solo tackles, 12 assists and one interception.

Prior to Friday’s Grant-Van Nuys game, the Grant defense had given up just 213 yards rushing in four games. But the Lancers allowed Van Nuys (1-3, 1-1) to run all over them, rushing for 180 yards, the most by any opponent this year.

Last year, Monroe intercepted five passes and recovered eight fumbles. This season, after just four games, Monroe (0-3-1, 0-2) has intercepted seven passes and recovered eight fumbles.

Kicking: Hoover’s David Bronner, who has kicked a 65-yard punt, made a 52-yard field goal in a loss to Pasadena. The senior also was successful from 57 yards, but the kick was nullified because of a penalty.

Drought ends: Poly’s 40-28 victory against host Monroe on Friday night was its first win away from home since 1987, according to Coach Fred Cuccia.

Turnaround: Before last week’s Grant-Van Nuys game, Van Nuys gave up an average of 317 yards. Van Nuys allowed just 106 yards in its 5-0 victory over Grant. Furthermore, Van Nuys previously had rushed for a total of 212 yards in three games but against Grant the ground game rolled up a season-high 180 yards.
