Craig Fortin’s touchdown pass last weekend was his first since 1983. Fortin hadn’t been mired in a seven-year slump, however; until Cal Lutheran’s past two games, he simply had not played in a game since ’83.

Fortin, 25, last played as a senior at Stonewall Jackson High in Manassas, Va. He joined the Kingsmen after three games this season. In his first extended action, he threw a touchdown pass in a 21-14 loss to La Verne.

Fortin said he spent 3 1/2 years between stints at Moorpark College, where he did not play football, and CLU.

He had been limited to intramural football at CLU after incurring tendinitis in an elbow in spring practice as a sophomore. Against La Verne, Fortin relieved Cassidy O’Sullivan when the starter suffered an injured knee. With O’Sullivan expected to miss Saturday’s game against Whittier, Fortin stands to become the third quarterback to start for the Kingsmen.

“I felt it in my stomach when I saw Cassidy coming off that it was my time to try to shine,” said Fortin, who entered before halftime and completed six of 18 passes for 72 yards. “I wasn’t as nervous as I thought I’d be.”
