PREP FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : Loyola Rallies, Beats St. John Bosco, 28-17

Loyola High, coming off a loss to Santa Ana Mater Dei, rebounded Thursday night with a 28-17 Angelus League victory over St. John Bosco at Glendale High.

The Cubs, ranked ninth in the Times’ Southern Section poll, trailed, 14-0, at halftime but rallied with four second-half touchdowns.

Junior running back Matt Vandis put Loyola on the board with a six-yard run with nine minutes remaining in the third quarter. Seven minutes later, senior running back Alex Yeboah scored on a 15-run to trim St. John Bosco’s lead to 17-14.

Vandis, who finished with 79 yards in 12 carries, scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 12-yard run at 9:19 of the fourth quarter. Senior quarterback Corby Smith connected with receiver Matt Hughes on a 31-yard touchdown pass five minutes later to cap the scoring as Loyola improved to 7-1, 1-1 in league.

St. John Bosco (5-3, 1-2) opened the early lead when linebacker Rudy Figueroa returned a fumble 53 yards for a touchdown. The Braves then put together an 80-yard drive in the second quarter, capped by Derek Ayers’ five-yard run.

Paramount 28, Mater Dei 11--Unbeaten Paramount, ranked fifth in the Times’ Southern Section poll, rolled to its eighth consecutive victory at Santa Ana Stadium.

Paramount rushed for 323 yards. Leon Neal gained 146 yards in 21 carries and teammate Demondre White added 115 yards in 10 carries for the two-time defending Division III champs.

Mater Dei is 4-4.

Tustin 25, Newport Harbor 7--Tustin, the top-ranked team in Division VI, rallied from a 7-6 first-half deficit at Tustin.

A two-yard run by Visko Ancich, son of Tustin Coach Marijon Ancich, a one-yard dive by quarterback Andy Borza and a 10-yard interception return by Aaron Gutridge accounted for the Tillers’ second-half scoring.
