3 Master’s Players Gain All-American Honors

The Master’s College soccer team, which advanced to the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics tournament for the first time this season, placed three players on the NAIA All-American team announced this week.

Chris Palm, a second-team selection at forward and the Mustangs’ leading scorer, made the squad for the fourth consecutive season.

Allan Bowden, the Mustangs’ goalie, and Randy Whitfield, a midfielder, received honorable mention.

Cal Lutheran’s Dan LaFond, a junior defender, and Dave Rinehart, a sophomore midfielder, were also honorable-mention selections.

The state champion Moorpark College wrestling team added Western State Conference athlete-of-the-year and coach-of-the-year awards to its trophy case.

Delfino Ochoa (in the 126-pound class) was named wrestler of the year, and John Keever was chosen coach of the year. Ochoa was joined by teammates Robby Cook (142) and Neal Mason (158) on the all-conference first team.

Billy Scannell (118), Pete Lutz (167) and Tony Flores (190) were selected to the second team.

Reggie Bell of College of the Canyons and Amy Chandler of Moorpark were selected Western State Conference basketball players of the week.

Bell, a 6-foot-4 freshman from Hawthorne High, scored 43 points and grabbed 30 rebounds in three games to help the Cougars to a second-place finish in the Glendale tournament.

Chandler, a 5-6 sophomore from Thousand Oaks High, had 40 points and 20 assists in two games. She leads WSC players in assists, averaging 7.8 a game.

Offensive lineman Pete Tucker of Occidental College was a third-team selection on the Associated Press Little All-American team. Pittsburgh punter Brian Greenfield, a former Notre Dame High standout, was a first-team selection to the AP All-East team.

Cal State Northridge has been ranked fourth in Volleyball Monthly Magazine’s preseason men’s volleyball poll.

USC, the defending national champion, is ranked first, followed by UCLA and Cal State Long Beach. Pepperdine is ranked fifth.

For the first time, The Master’s received votes in the NAIA Top 25 men’s basketball rankings. The Mustangs (6-4) received seven votes. Only two NAIA District 3 teams made the poll. Biola was No. 24 and Westmont was No. 25.
