COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Freshman Cole Leads Rancho Santiago

Daryl Cole scored 20 points to lead Rancho Santiago College to a 92-52 victory over Palomar in a nonconference basketball game Friday at Rancho Santiago.

Cole, a freshman from Orange Lutheran High School, made seven of nine shots including three three-pointers.

Erik Martin scored 17 points, Corie Blount 14 and Dave Yamate 12 for Rancho Santiago (15-1), which won its 12th consecutive game.

Point guard Brett Pagett sat out because of a stiff neck. Every other Rancho Santiago player scored.

In other nonconference men’s basketball:

Southwestern 78, Saddleback 73--Saddleback led, 71-66, with 6:25 left, but the Gauchos were outscored, 12-2, in the last 5:45 at Southwestern. Saddleback (7-6) played without starting center Dee Boyer, who has a twisted knee.

Matt Thompson led Saddleback with 18 points. Will Hutcheson, who started in place of Boyer at center, added 15, Patrick Brown 12 and Greg Reynolds 11. Southwestern is 4-8.

Palomar is 3-11.

Grossmont 84, Orange Coast 79--Grossmont built a 58-41 lead in the second half, but OCC went on a 22-7 run to cut the lead to 65-63 with about nine minutes left.

Mike Curtis made a three-pointer as OCC pulled to within 65-63, but the Pirates never got closer. Rich Hughes scored 20 and Agustin Heredia had 17 for OCC (7-6). Grossmont is 4-7.

In the Dixie (Utah) men’s tournament:

Cypress 82, Dixie 79--Eric Pauley scored 27 points, had 12 rebounds and five blocks, including a key one with 47 seconds left. Cypress held a 77-74 lead when Brian Sitter tried a three-point. Pauley rushed to the top of the key, blocked the shot, controlled the ball, headed up court and was fouled as he tried a layup. He made both free throws with 41 seconds left to give Cypress (11-5) a 79-74 lead.

Charles Lockard added 19 for Cypress, which plays Eastern Utah at 7 tonight for the tournament title. Lockard hit a three-pointer to put Cypress ahead for good, 75-72, with 1:27 left.

In women’s nonconference basketball:

Golden West 102, MiraCosta 58--Kim Kordik scored a career-high 27 points, and Allison Bickel had a career-high 20 for host Golden West (13-1). The Rustlers led, 47-39, after the first half, then went on a 27-0 run.

Kordik was 12 of 17 from the field and had 13 rebounds. Bickel was nine of 11 with 14 rebounds. Jenny Sullivan and Tracy Wolfe scored 16 each and Jennifer Harney 11 for Golden West.

Rancho Santiago 58, Mt. San Jacinto 44--Laurie Sallinger scored 12 points and Marianne Karp added 10 for visiting Rancho Santiago (7-9).
