Christmas has come early for several college football coaches who were able to sign standout South Bay community college players this season.

Two El Camino College football players have signed letters of intent with Division I colleges and 11 others are expected to sign in the near future, according to Coach John Featherstone. In addition, another player is expected to attend a Division II school.

One player from L.A. Southwest has signed and Coach Henry Washington said four others are expected to announce their decision by the end of the month. Three of the players are expected to attend Division I schools and two will go to Division II schools.

Harbor Coach Don Weems said he expects 13 of his athletes to compete at four-year schools next season. The second-year coach said five players are being recruited by Division I colleges and six by Division II schools. Two others players are expected to compete at NAIA schools.

El Camino, as expected, had the most impressive class of players. Featherstone said Calvert Johnson, a 6-foot-1, 200-pound tight end, has signed with the University of Idaho and linebacker Shawn Miller (6-1, 225) with Utah State, where he will join former Warrior quarterback Frank Dolce. Johnson and Miller were All-State selections.

Featherstone said four other All-State players are expected to announce their plans by the end of the year. Offensive lineman David Samperio (6-3, 280) will pick between Fresno State, Utah and San Jose State and tailback Anthony Diagle will choose between San Jose, Fresno State and Iowa State.

Diagle (5-11, 195 pounds) is the first player to rush for more than 1,000 yards in Featherstone’s six seasons at El Camino. The redshirt transfer from Arizona State was second in Mission Conference rushing with an average of 110 yards a game. His running helped the Warriors to a 9-2 record, including a victory in the Orange County Bowl.

Shannon Thompson (5-9, 165), the team’s best receiver, is expected to sign with New Mexico and defensive back William Lackey (5-8, 160) is considering Oregon State and the University of Nevada.

Offensive lineman Aaron Elliott (6-6, 295) will choose between Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Long Beach, UC Berkeley and the University of the Pacific. Wide receiver Steve Danzy (5-9, 170) is considering Fullerton and Nevada.

Cornerback Anthony Cole (6-0, 160) has narrowed his choices to Nebraska, UCLA and San Jose State and defensive lineman Tom Fakourfaur is expected to play at Division II Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Defensive backs Eric Nelson (6-3, 200) and Willie Crawford (6-1, 210) are both considering Memphis State and Northern Arizona. Crawford transferred to El Camino after a redshirt season at UCLA.

Featherstone said linebacker Henry Bens (6-1, 220) will play at the University of Idaho or Weber State and linebacker Andre Howard (6-1, 210) will pick between San Jose State and Nevada.

Washington said Eric Gibbs (5-11, 230) is headed to the University of Texas-El Paso. So far he is the only Southwest player that has signed.

Cougar defensive back David Mack (6-2, 185) is also being recruited by UTEP, Long Beach and Fullerton. Mack was the only All-State selection for Southwest, which finished 4-6.

Washington said defensive tackle Curtis Bingham (6-4, 230) is expected to sign with Northern Arizona in the next week. Linebacker Ahmed Mortis (6-2, 235) is expected to sign with Division II Southeast Missouri State and quarterback Craig Manigo might attend Division II Alabama State.

The coach said quarterback Glenn Baham (6-4, 200) and running back Bill Harris (6-3, 205) will go to NAIA Oregon Tech and linebacker Victor Dobbs (6-0, 220) will probably attend Arkansas State.

Offensive lineman James Conlon (6-3, 275) and defensive back Casey Causey (6-2, 180) should end up at Northern Arizona and wide receiver Cedric Jenkins (5-9, 165) and defensive back Tyrone Futch (6-1, 210) are being recruited by Division II San Francisco State.

Weems said three other Seahawks are being recruited by Division II Sonoma State: linebacker Tim Thomas (6-2, 230), tight end Mike Whitman (6-0, 225) and linebacker Robert Sawai (5-11, 225).
