HUNTINGTON BEACH — The undefeated El Toro High School girls’ soccer team tied Mater Dei with 45 seconds remaining in regulation and went on to a 3-2 overtime victory in the championship game of the Ocean View tournament Saturday.
Led by fullback Kim Donohue’s two second-half goals, the Monarchs (9-3-2) appeared on the verge of victory with 45 seconds remaining.
But El Toro (17-0-0), lining up for its fifth penalty kick in the final 14 minutes of regulation, tied the score when Denise Kenyon headed Leslie Steinert’s kick into the net.
El Toro took control in the first overtime when Shawn Viloria scored her 23rd goal of the season; the ball bounced off the outstretched hands of Monarch goalie Becky Thomas with eight minutes remaining for a 3-2 lead.
The Chargers dominated the first half and led, 1-0, on Kim Henry’s shot from the right side that caught the left side of the goal. Mater Dei didn’t get a clear shot at the Charger goal until Monica Chavez’s kick with five minutes remaining in the half.
“In the first half, we were in awe of them,” Monarch Coach Becki Schelhorse said. “But in the second half we decided to play like they play, with the short passing game, and we were successful.”
