Mt. Carmel 71, San Dieguito 65--San Dieguito pulled to within three with two minutes left, but Dana Pope (10 points), John Young (six) and Dan Kirby (six) each made two free throws to seal the victory for No. 10 Mt. Carmel, keeping alive the Sundevils’ title hopes.

Mt. Carmel (15-5, 5-4) pulled even with San Dieguito (12-8, 5-4), which was led by Chris Howard with 29 points. Both are a game behind Poway, Torrey Pines and Fallbrook. Mt. Carmel’s Ryan Wootton scored 19 and Scott Schoenwald 14. Pope had nine rebounds and six assists.

Rancho Buena Vista 68, Vista 64--Vista’s outside shooting game came apart under increased pressure from RBV’s man defense in the second half and Vista (7-12, 3-6) could score only 11 points in each of the final two quarters.

RBV (10-10, 5-4) won without Darryl Parker and Brad Grubaugh, the second and ninth leading scorers in the county, respectively. Coach John O’Neill forced them to sit out for disciplinary reasons.

Bond Schoeffel and Mike Ross each came through with 17 points to lead RBV and Abe Ajlouny pulled down 17 rebounds. James VanderVeur dealt nine assists.

Fallbrook 74, Orange Glen 45--Bob Nolan led Fallbrook (13-8, 6-3) into a three-way tie for first place by scoring 21 points. Orange Glen fell to 0-15, 0-9.

Avocado League

Ramona 78, San Marcos 58--Ramona improved to 12-6, 7-2 and set up Friday’s game against first-place El Camino as a showdown for first place.

Alfonso De La Nuez had six three-pointers in the winning effort and finished with 30 points. Teammate Clint Cook added 20.

Travis Knight led Ramona with eight rebounds and Cody Cunningham passed for six assists. San Marcos fell to 4-13, 1-9.

El Camino 73, Oceanside 52--Top-ranked El Camino (15-3, 8-1) gradually built a commanding lead over the first two periods, and the Wildcats’ Bryant Westbrooks held Oceanside’s leading scorer, Carl Mathis, scoreless in the first half and to five points for the game.

Shaun Scurry had 25 points, Westbrooks and Heath McCoy 14 and Jeff Reeves 13 for El Camino, which remained a game up in the league race. Dennis Owens scored 15 for Oceanside (6-14, 3-6).

Carlsbad 77, Escondido 48--Carlsbad improved to 11-9, 6-3 with a team effort--all 12 players scored. Matt Tague led with 15 points, nine of which came on three three-pointers. Damian Cephus led Escondido (2-7, 4-12) with 22.
