COMMUNITY COLLEGE BASEBALL : Five Games Serve as Season Openers Today

The 1991 community college baseball season opens today with five of the six Orange County teams playing.

Rancho Santiago, the defending Orange Empire Conference champion, opens at home at 2 p.m. against Oxnard in the first round the Dons’ Lidlifter Tournament. The tournament continues through Sunday’s 11 a.m. championship game.

Fullerton is also at home with a 10 a.m. game against El Camino in the opening round of the Cerritos/Fullerton Tournament. The final is at 10 a.m. Monday at Cerritos.

Cypress and Orange Coast open in the College of the Desert Tournament in Palm Desert and Palm Springs.

Cypress opens with host College of the Desert at 1 p.m. Orange Coast takes on Victor Valley at Angel Stadium in Palm Springs at 5:30 p.m. The tournament championship is at 1 p.m. Sunday at College of the Desert.

Golden West will travel north to take part in the Fresno Tournament. Golden West plays Merced at 10 a.m. in the first round. The championship is at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Saddleback plays its alumni at 11 a.m. Sunday.

The teams continue with tournaments and nonconference games until the Orange Empire Conference season opens Feb. 23.

Roger Weems became the second pitcher from a four-year college to transfer to Cypress College in a month, the college announced Thursday.

Weems, a sophomore right-hander from Esperanza High School, was 3-7 last season at California. He decided to come to Cypress during the semester break. He enrolled on Monday and will be eligible immediately.

Todd Blyleven transferred to Cypress from Oklahoma two weeks ago.
