Loyola to Play Top-Ranked Arizona State

The 10th-ranked Loyola Marymount baseball team opens a three-game series today at No. 1 Arizona State. The Lions (2-1) play afternoon games today, Saturday and Sunday against the Sun Devils (3-1).

The Lions defeated UC Irvine, 11-1, Tuesday. Left-hander Jon Willard earned the victory.

The early offensive leader for the Lions has been community college transfer Gerrado Perez, who has started all three games at third base. He is batting .545 and leading the Lions with three home runs and seven runs batted in. Junior outfielder Mark Tillman, getting a chance to play after seeing limited action his first two seasons, leads the team with a .571 average. Another community college transfer, catcher Andy Biaggi, is batting .500 with five RBIs.

Arizona State defeated UC Riverside, 13-5, Wednesday with pitching ace Sean Rees striking out nine batters in six innings.

The Sun Devils’ strength is their outfield of Mike Kelly in center, Jim Austin in left and Tommy Adams in right. Kelly is being projected as the potential first pick in the June draft.
