Coryell coached for the Aztecs from 1961 to 1972 (compiling a 104-19-2 record) before moving on to the St. Louis Cardinals. Coryell later went on to coach the San Diego Chargers.

BASKETBALL

Rancho Buena Vista has forfeited a 68-64 boys’ basketball victory over rival Vista for using an illegal player. The Longhorns used Mike Micknius in the game after he had participated in the school’s junior varsity game earlier in the evening. There are no state or section rules prohibiting a player from competing for two teams in one day, but there is a North County Conference rule against it. By the time Coach John O’Neill was advised of the infraction during the game, Micknius had already participated.

He scored five points in the four-point victory. The loss dropped RBV to 11-11, 6-5.

The 1940-41 San Diego State basketball team, winners of the National Intercollegiate Basketball Tournament (now the NAIA) in Kansas City, will be honored at halftime of the Aztecs-Colorado State basketball game Feb. 14 at the Sports Arena.

The 1940-41 team, which will be celebrating its 50-year reunion, compiled a 24-7 record and clinched the title with a 36-34 victory over Murray State.

BASEBALL

The Padres will hold their first “Play-By-Play: Jerry Coleman Baseball Dinner,” a benefit for the Child Abuse Prevention Foundation, at the San Diego Marriott Hotel and Marina Feb. 12. Among the guests expected are National League President Bill White, National League umpire Doug Harvey and announcers Jon Miller of the Baltimore Orioles and Dick Enberg of NBC-TV. Padres announcer Jerry Coleman will serve as master of ceremonies.

Padre Tony Gwynn will be one of four people inducted into the WAC Basketball Court of Honors in Wyoming March 8. Gwynn lettered in basketball for four years at SDSU and still holds an Aztec career record for assists with 590. He is the only athlete in WAC history to be named all-conference in two sports. Gwynn will be honored along with former WAC commissioner Stan Bates, Air Force’s Robert Beckel and Wyoming’s Kenny Sailors.
