COMMUNITY COLLEGE BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Fullerton Rallies to Beat Southwestern

Down to its last strike, Fullerton College rallied for four runs to beat Southwestern, 8-7, in the second round of the Apache baseball tournament Friday at Southwestern College.

With two outs in the ninth, the Hornets’ Ramon Apodaca singled to left on an 0-2 count. That was the first of five consecutive hits for Fullerton (6-2).

Frank Saver tied the score, 7-7, with a bases-loaded double. Kenny Humphrey then singled to score Saver and win the game.

Jim Burchit went the distance for the victory. He gave up five runs in the first inning, then settled down.

Burchit (2-0) allowed four earned runs and struck out 13.

In other Apache tournament games:

Rancho Santiago 6, Los Angeles Harbor 3--Sophomore Paul O’Hern (2-0) pitched a five-hitter with 10 strikeouts as Rancho Santiago (4-1) eliminated L.A. Harbor, the defending state champions, from the tournament. Robyn Lindsey, a freshman from Marina High School, hit a two-run home run in the ninth to give Rancho Santiago a 6-3 lead.

Rancho Santiago 8, San Diego Mesa 3--Jesse Rosas (2-0) pitched the final five innings for the victory. Lindsey hit a bases-empty home run for Rancho Santiago.

In the Cypress Kiwanis tournament quarterfinals:

Cypress 11, Merced 4--Sophomore first baseman Doug McConathy was four for four with two home runs for host Cypress (5-2) in a quarterfinal. McConathy drove in four and scored four. Cypress advances to the semifinals against Long Beach City College at 10 a.m. today.

Golden West 5, Santa Rosa 1--Golden West (3-3) scored four runs on four hits in the second inning. Derek Ogle (2-0) went the distance, allowing five hits and a run in the sixth inning on a double, a balk and a ground out. Golden West shortstop Jason Brissey was two for four and had an RBI double in the second inning.

Golden West was later eliminated by Merced, 6-5.

In the College of Desert Tournament:

Saddleback 11, Los Angeles Valley 8--Eric Schreifels had a pair of two-run triples as Saddleback (3-1) won a first-round game in Palm Springs.
