COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Cypress Beats Long Beach; They’ll Play for Title Today

Doug McConathy and Tom Puppe each had two-run singles in a six-run sixth inning as Cypress College defeated Long Beach, 6-0, Saturday in the Cypress Kiwanis baseball tournament.

Cypress (6-2) and Long Beach (5-3) will play at 11 a.m. today in the championship game. If Long Beach wins, a second game will follow to determine the champion.

Carlos Castillo (2-0) allowed seven hits, struck out eight and walked three in 7 2/3 innings before Dan Kramer came in with the bases loaded and got the third out.

In the College of the Desert baseball tournament:

Saddleback 10, College of the Desert 3--First baseman Robert Garcia had two hits and three runs batted in. Relief pitcher Karl Hardman allowed one hit in three innings to get the victory.

In the Apache tournament:

Rancho Santiago 5, Fullerton 2 (11 innings)--Jeremy Sherman scored from second on a sacrifice fly and Raul Rodarte singled in two more runs in the 11th for Rancho Santiago. The Dons will play Pima (Ariz.) for the championship at 11 a.m. today at Southwestern College in Chula Vista. Rancho Santiago (7-1) must beat Pima twice to win the title.

Steve Grack led off the ninth with a bases-empty home run to tie the score for Rancho Santiago.

Orange Coast 6, Chaffey 1--Alicia Nelson hit a two-run single and Tina Fuata followed with a two-run double in a six-run fourth inning for Orange Coast (2-0) in a winners’ bracket game. Nelson (1-0) allowed five hits and struck out five for the Pirates.
