CSUN’s Cassidy in Stable Condition; Intestinal Surgery May Be Avoided

Cal State Northridge basketball Coach Pete Cassidy, hospitalized Friday after complaining of intestinal pain, was listed in stable condition Saturday at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Woodland Hills, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Bob Hiegert, the school’s athletic director, said Saturday that Cassidy, 56, began to feel queasy during Northridge’s game against USC on Feb. 4.
Hiegert said that a CAT scan performed Saturday indicated that surgery might not be necessary, and Lynn Brassfield, a spokeswoman for the medical center, reported that as of late Saturday surgery had not been performed.
“They are going to keep him on antibiotics and observe him for the next day or two,” Hiegert said. “His temperature is down, but he is still uncomfortable.”
CSUN assistant Tom McCollum coached the team Friday during a 64-48 loss to Boise State. If Cassidy cannot coach Monday, when the Matadors play host to Wisconsin-Milwaukee, McCollum again will serve as head coach.
