Cal State Northridge basketball Coach Pete Cassidy is in stable condition after surgery Thursday afternoon at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Woodland Hills. Doctors removed a 1 1/2-foot infectious pocket of Cassidy’s lower intestine.

Cassidy, 56, will remain hospitalized for at least a week. The length of Cassidy’s recovery is uncertain, but he is expected to miss the rest of the season. Northridge has five games left in its inaugural Division I season. CSUN’s last game is March 5 at Cal.

According to Cassidy’s wife Sandy, her husband was sleepy and in pain after the operation.

Cassidy was hospitalized Feb. 8 after running a high fever and complaining of pain. He began to feel queasy on Feb. 4, the day Northridge lost to USC at the Sports Arena.

Northridge’s first-year assistant coach, Tom McCollum, 41, will continue to direct the Matadors in Cassidy’s absence.

Cassidy, in his 20th year at Northridge, has missed three games so far, including Thursday night’s game at U. S. International in San Diego.
