COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Canyons Clinches Southern Division Basketball Title, 74-72

College of the Canyons’ men’s basketball team won a seesaw battle at Bakersfield to clinch the Western State Conference Southern Division title Saturday with a 74-72 victory.

Nick Sanderson buried a pair of free throws with 16 seconds left and teammate Reggie Bell blocked a three-point attempt with four seconds to play to nail down the win.

The lead switched hands three times in the final 1 minute 30 seconds. Canyons trailed by two, 68-66, with 1:30 to play.

In other men’s games:

Valley 84, Santa Monica 72--The visiting Monarchs rallied from a 25-10 deficit in the WSC Southern Division game. Tory Stephens (26 points) and Rick Garrick (21) led Valley (19-12, 8-2).

The Master’s 87, Christian Heritage 78--Jason Webster and Damon Greer scored 12 points each for The Master’s (19-9, 11-3), leading four scorers into double figures, in an NAIA District 3 game at home.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Moorpark 93, Oxnard 37--Moorpark completed its best season in school history with a dusting of visiting Oxnard in a Western State Conference game.

The Raiders, paced by Jeny Shotliff’s 26 points and Kerrie Marshall’s 24, finished the regular season 28-4 overall and their 7-1 conference mark tied them with Ventura for a fourth-consecutive WSC Northern Division championship.

Pierce 80, Glendale 34--All 14 Pierce players scored--including three who reached double figures--in a WSC Southern Division game at Pierce. Myria Coronado scored 11 points and teammates Lisa Little and Luisa Parra added 10 each for the Brahmas (20-9, 5-5).

Bakersfield 76, Canyons 71--Canyons boasted a seven-point lead with five minutes to play but was then outscored, 19-8, in a WSC Southern Division game at Bakersfield.

Valley 65, Santa Monica 59--Tisa Rush scored 14 points, Katina Mines had 13 and Sylvia Castaneda 12 as visiting Valley (28-4, 9-1) clinched the Southern Division championship of the WSC.

Southern Utah State 81, Cal State Northridge 73--Four starters fouled out for visiting CSUN, which led, 38-37, at halftime. Bridgette Ealy had 21 points and 10 rebounds for CSUN (10-15).

BASEBALL

Riverside 6-17, Ventura 8-2--Riverside shelled seven Ventura pitchers for 18 hits in the second game of the Riverside tournament championship doubleheader. Ventura (10-2) had to win both games to win the double-elimination tournament title.

Moorpark 9, Rio Hondo 3--Will Egan had two doubles and four runs batted in and Chris Chandler went three for five--including a double and home run--in the second round of the Central Coast tournament at Hancock College.

SOFTBALL

Arizona tournament: Cal State Northridge defeated Florida State, 1-0, in single-elimination play of the Arizona tournament in Tucson, behind the two-hit pitching of Pam Barr (2-2). The Matadors will face Ohio State today in continuation of single-elimination play.
