Greer to Return at Monroe but as Co-Coach With Graber

After a week of discussion with Monroe High administrators, Wendell Greer Jr. decided to return as boys’ basketball coach next season. But Greer earned a concession: He will share the position.
Paul Graber, who coached the junior varsity this season, will coach jointly with Greer, who led the Vikings to their best record in several years.
Greer was asked to coach after David Spirlin abruptly resigned a few days before the fall semester. Spirlin had been hired to replace Dennis King, who led Monroe to a 4-15 record in 1989-90.
Greer agreed but promised only to complete the 1990-91 season. Graber first was approached to take over next season when Greer said he would not return, but school administrators this week persuaded Greer to return in a co-coaching capacity.
Monroe finished 12-12, winning more games than in the past four seasons combined (10).
Greer said that Graber, who additionally coached at Van Nuys Junior High from 1983-90, will handle the offense. Graber, 33, is a 1975 graduate of Burroughs High and a social science teacher.
