Six South Bay Girls’ Teams Still Alive in Playoffs

Six South Bay girls’ basketball teams will resume play this weekend in the L.A. City Section and CIF-Southern Section playoffs. Following is a rundown of games involving area teams:

L.A. CITY SECTION

Carson (23-4) vs. Crenshaw at Loyola Marymount University, 6 tonight--The second-seeded Colts advanced to the 4-A Division semi finals with a 69-41 victory Wednesday over Dorsey. Bernetta James led Carson with 22 points, followed by Joanne Robertson with 16 and Bernice Alafua with 15. Crenshaw, despite scoring only two points in the fourth quarter, escaped with a 49-45 quarterfinal victory over Van Nuys.

SOUTHERN SECTION

Millikan (17-9) at Morningside (26-2), 7:30 p.m. Saturday--Top-seeded Morningside could be headed for its first test of the playoffs in this Division I-AA quarterfinal. Millikan, which advanced Wednesday with a 74-64 victory over San Gabriel, boasts a dangerous scoring duo in Taniko Hilbert, who had 26 points Wednesday, and Tiffany Maxwell, who had 17. Morningside relies on the inside play of 6-foot-4 center Janet Davis and forward Akiba Flanagan.

Bishop Montgomery (22-4) at Cypress (21-6), 7:30 p.m. Saturday--Bishop Montgomery easily won its first two Division II-A playoff games, overpowering Fullerton, 94-46, Wednesday behind a balanced attack led by guard Lily Cabaleiro (19 points) and forward Stacie Smith (18). Cypress, the Empire League champion, advanced with a 54-48 victory over El Modena.

Palos Verdes (25-2) at Paso Robles (10-15), 7:30 p.m. Saturday--Judging by the respective records, top-seeded Palos Verdes doesn’t figure to meet much of a challenge on its trip to the Central Coast area. The Sea Kings beat up yet another opponent in its Division III-AA playoff opener last week with a 95-20 victory over Laguna Hills.

Ganesha (22-2) at South Torrance (15-12), 7:30 p.m. Saturday--South, the team that gave up 101 points in a half last season to Morningside’s Lisa Leslie, has made quite a turnaround. The Spartans advanced to the Division III-AA quarterfinals with a 52-48 victory over El Dorado.

South Hills (18-6) at St. Bernard (22-6), 7:30 p.m. Saturday--St. Bernard, third-place finisher in the Mission League, faces Valle Vista League champion South Hills of West Covina in a Division III-A quarterfinal.
