SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

For the third time in as many years, controversy has tainted the City Section boys’ soccer championship match.

Chatsworth High stunned defending champion and previously undefeated Bell, 1-0, at Birmingham High for its first boys’ title, but Bell Coach William Albano would testify that regulation ended in a 1-1 tie.

With one second to play, Bell’s Edgar Ferrer lobbed a corner kick to Oscar Dorado, who butted a head shot into the upper-left corner of the Chatsworth goal for an apparent score. However, Herman Gompers--announced before the match as an internationally renowned referee--blew the final whistle before the ball broke the plane of the goal.

Chatsworth (12-2-4) rejoiced. Bell (13-1-3), which had a 28-game undefeated streak snapped, argued.

“This was a perfectly legal goal because it was definitely in before the whistle,” Albano said.

Hal Harkness, the City Section commissioner, believed the call was correct. “They are comparing soccer to other sports where, when the ball hits the foot or the arm, then it is in play,” he said. “That is not a soccer rule.”

Chatsworth Coach Richard Doran said Gompers told him one second remained in the match when Doran was attending to Jay Debs, who was injured in a collision in front of the Chatsworth goal.

“(Gompers) said he was going to blow the whistle as soon as the ball was kicked (by Ferrer),” Doran said.

Ed Ramos scored on a head shot after a centering pass by Jeremy Foster at the 15-minute mark in the second half to give Chatsworth its 1-0 lead.

Kevin Wong received a throw-in from Foster and booted the ball back to the midfielder, who then lifted a high arching pass to Ramos eight yards in front of the Bell goal.

“I wasn’t sure if (Kevin) was going to turn with it or pass it back to me,” Foster said. “He passed it back to me and it was perfect. I put it up and Ed knocked it in.”

GIRLS

Chatsworth 6, San Pedro 1--Mary Oades scored six goals to set a City girls’ single-game playoff record in leading Chatsworth to its third consecutive City title.

Oades, a sophomore forward, took seven shots in the game. San Pedro goalkeeper Elisa De La Pena saved the first one but Oades’ next six--four in the first half--found home.

“We were saying, ‘Just kick it up and let Mary get it,’ ” said Heather Gorman, who assisted on Oades’ first and third goals. “She really shined today.”

Chatsworth co-Coach Steve Berk also praised Oades.

“She just manages to play at another level when it’s needed,” he said.

Chatsworth (17-0) has shined through all three of its playoff matches this season. The Chancellors outscored their playoff opponents (Roosevelt, Birmingham and San Pedro), 22-3, and took almost nine times as many shots on goal, 97-11.

“We were (in) a little over our heads,” San Pedro Coach Chuck Hawksford said. “They beat us on the fixed plays and throw-ins. I knew if they scored a couple of goals we would be in trouble.”

San Pedro (20-3) avoided a shutout when Julie Menefee cracked a 40-yard shot over the head of goalkeeper Kim Kuhn late in the match.
