HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL SOUTHERN SECTION BOYS’ CHAMPIONSHIPS : DIVISION II-AA

Tustin 70, Riverside North 48--David Beilstein scored 20 points and Thomas Clayton added 17 to lead the Tillers to their first Southern Section championship.

The Tustin (26-4) starters outscored the top-seeded Huskies’ starters, 60-11. North (24-4) played most of the game without standout guard Terreno Butler, who left in the first quarter because of a leg injury.

DIVISION III-A

Pomona 48, Costa Mesa Estancia 45--Dedrique Taylor made two free throws with 1.8 seconds left to ice the victory for the Red Devils.

Taylor finished with 11 points as second-seeded Pomona (22-6) held off a fourth-quarter rally by top-seeded Estancia (25-5).

Estancia cut a 10-point deficit to 46-45 on Matt Fuerbringer’s follow shot with 35 seconds remaining. Fuerbringer stole a pass 10 seconds later, giving Estancia a final chance to win.

But Pomona’s Johnny McWilliams blocked an eight-foot driving shot by Paul McDaniels with six seconds left. Estancia’s Son Ly rebounded and shot an off-balance three-pointer with four seconds left that rattled out of the rim. Taylor pulled down the rebound, was fouled and hit the free throws to seal the victory. Fuerbringer led all scorers with 21 points and had a game-high 21 rebounds.

DIVISION III-AA

Anaheim Servite 49, Inglewood Morningside 46--Forward Adam Anderson scored Servite’s last six points on free throws, including four in the last 15 seconds.

Servite (23-6) will begin defense of its State Division III title next week in the Southern Regional State tournament.

Top-seeded Morningside (27-4), which is hoping to get an at-large berth in the regionals, led, 46-43, with 2:23 remaining after a layup by forward Arthur Savage. But a series of mistakes down the stretch prevented the Monarchs from scoring again.

In the final 1 1/2 minutes, Morningside missed a breakaway layup, threw the ball away on a no-look pass and was cited for a technical foul for having six players on the court.
