PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Servite Power Is Too Much for Santiago

Cliff Mierendorf and Matt Muller each hit home runs as Servite defeated Santiago, 9-5, in a quarterfinal game of the Loara tournament Wednesday at Servite.

Servite (3-0) scored four runs in the fourth to take a 6-4 lead. Muller, who hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning, had five runs batted in.

Todd DeVaney had a home run on the first pitch of the game for Santiago (4-1), which committed seven errors.

In other Loara tournament quarterfinal games:

Fountain Valley 5, San Clemente 2--Brian Ponchak (allowed no hits for four innings and Joe Penaflor had two doubles and scored two runs for the Barons (3-0).

Marina 3, Dana Hills 0--Matt Hay’s three-run homer in the sixth won the game at Glover Stadium. Dean Soto (1-0) pitched six innings, striking out six and allowing five hits for Marina (3-0).

In consolation games of the Loara baseball tournament:

Laguna Hills 8, Kennedy 4--Rich Mazer, Scott Dowd and Brett Nista combined to pitch a four-hitter, allowing just one earned run for visiting Laguna Hills (2-1).

Lakewood 8, Villa Park 7--Lakewood’s Scott Henderson struck out 10 in five innings. Trailing 7-1, Villa Park scored five runs in the sixth. Aaron Boone and Jason Martian each had three hits for Villa Park (1-2).

El Dorado 20, Magnolia 0--Matt Svoboda had three hits and five RBIs for host El Dorado (2-1), which had a nine-run fourth.

Los Amigos 4, University 3--Ryan Wise hit a two-run home run, and Dan Grudt hit a bases-empty home run that gave host Los Amigos (1-2) a 4-2 lead in the fourth inning.

Irvine 7, Katella 3--Bobby Ray allowed five hits and no earned runs in his first varsity start. Mark Huffman had two hits, two stolen bases and three runs scored for Irvine (2-1).

Savanna 7, Ocean View 3--Hien Nguyen had two triples, Aaron Brown had three hits and Rich Odowick had two hits for Savanna. Andy Trumpour allowed eight hits in the complete game victory for Savanna (2-1).

Sunny Hills 13, Cypress 2--Tony Martinez had four hits, including two doubles, scored twice and had two RBIs and Erren O’Leary had four hits and scored three runs for host Sunny Hills (1-2).

La Quinta 5, Anaheim 4--Walter Dawkins hit home run to lead off the seventh inning to tie the score at 5-5, and La Quinta (2-1) was able to score on a force play from third when the catcher could not handle the throw.

In the El Segundo tournament:

Brea-Olinda 10, Artesia 0--In a consolation game, Tim Carman pitched a two-hitter and struck out 10 and Jesse Willes had two hits and three RBIs for Brea (1-1).

Arcadia 3, Edison 1--In a championship-round game, Arcadia’s Dino Small had a home run to lead off the the bottom of the first. Shawn Allbee pitched five innings, striking out five, allowing five hits and one earned run for Edison (1-1).

In the Newport Elks tournament:

Capistrano Valley 3, El Modena 0--Ethan Wyckoff pitched a perfect game for five innings but Scott Patton, who allowed one hit and struck out three, pitched the final two innings and got the victory for the Cougars (2-0).
