ALL-COUNTY TEAMS AND ATHLETES OF THE YEAR : El Toro’s Viloria Has Been Tough to Take Out

Each time Shawn Viloria stepped on the soccer field for El Toro this season, she faced certain hazards.

As the best offensive player on the top-ranked girls’ soccer team in the Southern Southern Division 4-A, Viloria was the player opponents most wanted to stop.

“I got taken out every game,” said Viloria, The Times’ player of the year for the second consecutive season. “I remember a game in the Irvine tournament when every time I would get taken out, the crowd--I mean you don’t get much of a crowd--but the kids on the sideline would all say, ‘All right, take her out, No. 22.’ I think people like watching me fall.”

The problem for El Toro opponents was that Viloria would invariably get up and dole out retribution. Her retaliation was often swift.

For instance, Viloria recalled a South Coast League game against San Clemente, in which she became incensed after being knocked to the ground near the goal.

“I was so mad and when I got the ball the next time, I took it all the way down by myself and scored,” she said. “When people get me mad, that’s when I usually turn on more. Sometimes it helps, but I still don’t encourage it.”

Usually, Viloria didn’t have to take such drastic action. El Toro, which went 29-0-2 on the way to its second consecutive Southern Section title, had so many outstanding players that it wasn’t necessary for Viloria to take over a game.

Viloria, who is expected to be named the 4-A offensive player of the year for the second consecutive season, scored goals in all but five of the Chargers’ games. She finished with 40 goals, the most in Orange County, and 14 assists.

“If you go after her, she’s going to find an open player and she doesn’t have to score a lot of goals,” Simi Valley Coach Mark Johnson said. “She just has so much vision and so much insight into the game.”

Johnson, who watched Viloria score the Chargers’ second goal and assist the third in El Toro’s 3-1 victory over Simi Valley in the 4-A final, said because of El Toro’s overall talent his team didn’t guard Viloria more closely than anyone else.

Perhaps it wasn’t a wise decision. Early in the second half, Viloria streaked into a pack of defenders, jumped to meet a corner kick by Shawna Berke and scored on a header. It was the type of play that defines why Viloria, who signed a letter of intent to play at UC Santa Barbara, is an outstanding player, El Toro Coach Kerry Krause said.

“She can attack in the air and do things that other people only dream about doing,” Krause said. “Everybody in the place has to know the ball is going to come to her; yet, she gets it anyway.”
