HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Wichmann’s Save Keeps Notre Dame Unbeaten

Relief pitcher Cary Wichmann dug himself into a seventh-inning hole but struck out the final two batters to give host Notre Dame High a 3-2 victory over Lynwood on Thursday in a nonleague game.

With the Knights (4-0) ahead, 3-1, Wichmann surrendered two walks and two singles as Lynwood pulled to within 3-2.

Cesar Hernandez doubled home Vinnie Orlando in the fifth for a 2-1 Notre Dame lead. In the sixth, Cesar Martinez walked, stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored when Lynwood’s Chris Apodaca threw the ball away in an attempt to get Mike Salas at first.

In other baseball games:

Chatsworth 17, Reseda 0--Mitch Root doubled, homered twice, drove in six runs and picked up the win in a West Valley League rout at Chatsworth. The home run was Root’s third this week.

Nestor Martinez had three hits and Adam Pearlman doubled twice for Chatsworth (5-1, 3-0). Thurman Williams also had three hits, scored three runs and stole two bases for the Chancellors.

El Camino Real 9, Taft 6--Sean Boldt had two hits, including a three-run home run in the first inning, for host El Camino Real (2-1, 2-1) in a West Valley League game.

El Camino Real’s Greg Sheren had two hits, including a three-run double. John Soto blasted his second and third home runs, a double, and drove in four runs for Taft (3-3, 1-2).

Granada Hills 12, Cleveland 3--Robert Vasquez was two for three and drove in three runs to lead host Granada Hills (3-4, 1-2) in a North Valley League game.

Granada Hills’ Bryan Martin and Eric Anderson each had a double and a single, and Anderson drove in two runs.

Grant 4, North Hollywood 2--Nick Oriti singled in Ron Carver with the go-ahead run in the sixth inning to support the complete-game pitching of Holvik Castro in an East Valley League game at North Hollywood.

Oriti went three for three with two runs scored for the Lancers (2-4, 1-2).

Monroe 15, Birmingham 1--Marco Alvarado was four for five with four RBIs and Scott Riding had three hits--including a double and a triple--with three RBIs and two runs scored for Monroe in a Mid-Valley League game at home.

Jorge Dorado (1-0) struck out nine and scattered four hits in a complete-game victory.

Canyon 2, St. Bernard 2--Senior right-hander Erik Hiljus struck out 12 and allowed just four hits in a nonleague game at St. Bernard that was called after eight innings because of darkness.

Josh Malneck hit a solo home run for Canyon (3-0-1).

Crossroads 5, Oakwood 4--Nat Perlof and Matt Williams each had two hits for Oakwood (1-2) in a nonleague game at Crossroads. Crossroads improved to 2-2.

Wilson 8, Verdugo Hills 4--Matt Ward hit a double and a home run for Verdugo Hills (0-5-1, 0-3).

Van Nuys 9, Canoga Park 2--Rusty Howard (1-0) struck out 13 and surrendered just four hits in going the distance for visiting Van Nuys in a Mid-Valley League game at Lanark Park.

Howard was three for four with two doubles and four RBIs and Alex Alvarenga had three hits.

Dos Pueblos 8, Newbury Park 2--Dos Pueblos (3-2) overcame a 2-0 deficit to post a nonleague win at home. Joe Harris went two for three for Newbury Park (2-6).

Whitney 18, L.A. Baptist 12--Senior first baseman Chris Herthel homered and drove in three runs for L.A. Baptist (1-3) in the nonleague game.

SOFTBALL

Simi Valley 11, Channel Islands 1--Michele Castonguay and Sara Griffin combined on a one-hitter and had 13 strikeouts to help the Pioneers (3-0) beat host Channel Islands (2-3) in a Marmonte League opener.

Simi Valley scored 10 runs in the first inning on five hits, two walks and three errors. Castonguay, Kathy Beasley and Kris Lufkin each had two hits for the Pioneers.

Thousand Oaks 3, Westlake 0--Carrie Russell (1-2) scattered three hits and walked none for Thousand Oaks, which won a Marmonte League opener at Westlake.

Christy Collier had two hits for the Lancers (1-2 overall), who turned three double plays.

Newbury Park 3, Agoura 1--Sophie Sobol (3-0) allowed six hits, walked one and struck out four as Newbury Park won a Marmonte League opener at home.

Karen Zappia’s RBI triple helped Newbury Park (5-0 overall) stay unbeaten.

Chatsworth 10, Birmingham 4--Harriett Kenoi and Janet Carrillo each hit a home run to lead last year’s City Section 4-A runner-up in a nonleague game at home.

Alemany 17, Kennedy 1--Krista Gomez was three for five with six RBIs and Lisa Asahara doubled twice for Alemany (6-0) in a nonleague game at Kennedy that was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Sylmar 2, El Camino Real 1 (12 innings)--Traci Hanna hit a bases-loaded single that scored Jamie Vo with none out in a nonleague game at Sylmar.

Taft 8, Van Nuys 5--April Tobin was four for five and Keri Borzello added three hits for host Taft (2-1) in a nonleague game. Angie Todd hit a grand slam for Taft.

Oak Park 13, Nordhoff 6--Becky Feldman and Stefanie Dell were each two for three with two runs and an RBI for host Oak Park (2-1) in a nonleague game.

Montclair Prep 6, Providence 5--Kari Johnson’s two-run double scored Melissa Miller and Tamara Silvera in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Montclair Prep (4-0) to a nonleague win at home.

VOLLEYBALL

Chaminade d. Alemany, 9-15, 10-15, 15-10, 15-11, 15-13--Travis Hall had 15 kills and Chaminade (2-3, 1-2) rallied from a two-game deficit in a Mission League match at Alemany. Ariel Bernardo and Eric Younker each had 15 put-aways for Alemany.

Crespi d. Taft, 15-13, 10-15, 15-11, 15-10--Frank Romano had 20 kills for Crespi (3-1) in a nonleague match at Crespi.

Campbell Hall d. Crossroads, 15-11, 15-6, 15-13--Lee Sprague had 19 kills and four aces to pace Campbell Hall (3-1) to a nonleague win.
