All-Star Teams Are Getting Their Points Across : Girls: Six players average 17 or more points. Walnut’s Williams is player of year and Ganesha’s Stewart is coach of year.

Ever since she first started playing girls basketball as a freshman at Walnut High, Davette Williams appeared to be a step ahead of her competition.

She started and earned All-Valle Vista League honors as a freshman.

As a sophomore, Williams duplicated the all-league feat and earned honorable mention on The Times All-San Gabriel Valley team.

And this past season, Williams not only earned all-league selection for the third season in a row, she was also named the league’s most valuable player. The 5-foot-8 junior is also The Times San Gabriel Valley player of the year.

Ganesha Coach Wesley Stewart was selected the coach of the year. In its third season under Stewart, Ganesha finished 24-3 and reached the Southern Section Division III-AA semifinals for the first time.

After Williams, the 10-player All-San Gabriel Valley squad consists of center Kimberlyn Davis of Muir, guards Mamawi Duffy of Pasadena, Amy Fu of Diamond Bar and Dominique Lindsey of Ganesha, forwards Katie Miner of Wilson, Angel Morris of Pomona, Dina Palacios of Glendora and Stephanie Ring of South Hills and center Kai Wattree of Northview.

It is one of the youngest All-San Gabriel Valley teams ever. The team includes two sophomores and four juniors. Duffy and Miner are sophomores and Fu, Lindsey, Ring and Williams are juniors.

Muir always seems to produce an outstanding front-line player and Davis is no exception. She was the team’s leading scorer, averaging 18.1 points, and demonstrated her strong presence underneath the basket by averaging 13.2 rebounds and five blocked shots. She also was an All-Pacific League selection.

Duffy, who helped Pasadena to a 14-7 season and second place in league play, averaged 18 points, eight assists, seven steals and five assists. The point guard was also chosen to the All-Pacific League team.

One of the best all-around athletes on the squad is Diamond Bar’s Fu, who is also one of the school’s top tennis and badminton players. As a basketball player, she averaged 13 points, eight rebounds, 5.5 assists and four steals this season.

Fu, who helped lead the Brahmas to an 18-10 record and the second round of the Division I-A playoffs, was also named to the All-Sierra League team for the third consecutive season and was selected to all-tournament teams at the Wilson and Ontario tournaments.

The shortest member of the squad is 5-foot-2 Lindsey, but she has big-time ability as a basketball player. Lindsey, the floor leader for Ganesha, averaged 15.2 points, eight assists, 4.3 steals and 2.1 rebounds. She was selected most valuable player of the competitive Hacienda League.

Miner helped Wilson to its first winning record (19-7) in four seasons. She averaged a team-leading 15 points and 10 rebounds, along with three steals and three assists. Miner was also named most valuable player in the Sierra League.

Morris averaged 19.8 points and 10 rebounds for Pomona and was selected the Montview League player of the year.

Palacios averaged 17.8 points and 9.8 rebounds to earn selection to the All-Baseline League team. Playing forward and point guard, she also averaged three assists and 2.1 steals for Glendora, which finished 14-11.

Although Ring is only 5-8, she averaged 15.9 points and 12.8 rebounds for South Hills. She also made the All-Valle Vista League team and the all-tournament teams at the Charter Oak and St. Lucy’s tournaments.

Northview’s Wattree, who averaged 17.3 points, 15 rebounds and three blocked shots, was perhaps the area’s most dominant inside player in 1990-91.

Walnut’s Williams demonstrated her versatility by averaging 17 points, 6.5 rebounds, 5.6 steals and 4.3 assists.
