3 From Gahr's High-Flying Playoff Team Earn Honors on Prep Girls All-Star Team

Three players from Gahr High School in Cerritos, which went to the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section playoffs, head The Times' 1991 South Coast Prep Girls All-Star Basketball Team.

The Gahr representatives are Allison Arredondo, Shameka Brown and Kris Waldorf.

Three teams--Cerritos, Millikan and Lakewood--each have placed two players on the team, and Lakewood's Melissa Gower, who averaged 16 rebounds a game, has been named Player of the Year.

Lakewood's Dow Lawson, who guided the Lancers to a 26-2 record, is Coach of the Year.

Repeaters on the all-star team are Gower, Charon Johnson of Lakewood, Taniko Hilbert of Millikan and Amy Hughlett of Cerritos.

Here is the South Coast team:

Melissa Gower, Lakewood--"Melissa is one of those kids who thinks every rebound should be hers," said Lakewood Coach Dow Lawson. Gower, who is going to Cal State Long Beach, averaged 16 rebounds and 22.5 points. The 6-3 Player of the Year shot 76% from the free-throw line.

Charon Johnson, Lakewood--Consistent at both ends of the floor, Johnson averaged 21 points and 13 rebounds. She also shot 56% from the field and averaged four steals a game. She was co-most valuable player of the Moore League with Millikan's Hilbert. Johnson also is going to Cal State Long Beach.

Lashon Egans, Compton--"She was a leader and had a great attitude," Compton Coach Carolyn Montgomery said of Egans, a 5-9 senior and all-Moore League selection who averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds. "She is a very fluid player," Montgomery added.

Taniko Hilbert, Millikan--A 5-8 junior, Hilbert averaged 20 points, 10 rebounds and eight steals. During the playoffs she averaged 30 points. "She has the potential to turn a game around at any time," Millikan Coach Lorene Morgan said. "I think she should be an All-American next year."

Tiffany Maxwell, Millikan--Intense, quick and willing to work hard, Maxwell, a 5-5 sophomore, averaged 13.5 points and six rebounds. She has become a solid defensive player.

Allison Arredondo, Gahr--The MVP of the San Gabriel Valley League, Arredondo averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds. She is 6-2 and only a junior.

Shameka Brown, Gahr--Brown, a 6-2 senior, led the Gladiators in blocked shots and also averaged 10 points and seven rebounds. She was Gahr's captain.

Kris Waldorf, Gahr--Like Arredondo and Brown, Waldorf made the all-San Gabriel Valley League team. A 5-6 junior point guard, she averaged 10 points and five assists. Her greatest strength is handling the ball.

Amy Hughlett, Cerritos--One of the area's top rebounders with 10 a game, the 6-3 Hughlett also averaged 11 points. The junior "dedicated herself to the game," said Cerritos Coach Ann Dena Sjoerdsma.

Marja Miller, Cerritos--Defense was the specialty of Miller, who had 201 steals. The 5-11 senior averaged 11.6 points and won all-league honors.
