Second baseman Darrel Deak hit two home runs and relief pitcher Joe Caruso earned his eighth and ninth saves as Loyola Marymount swept a doubleheader from visiting University of Hartford, 9-1, and 2-1, Wednesday.
Deak got Loyola off to a good start in the first inning of the first game by hitting a three-run homer. Starting pitcher Chris Spears picked up his sixth victory against four losses. Caruso, who entered the game in the fifth inning, struck out nine. Shortstop Chris Gomez was two for four.
In the nightcap, Deak’s solo homer tied the score in the fourth inning after Hartford pushed across an unearned run in the top of the inning.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Loyola loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batter. Mark Tillman singled to drive in the game-winning run. Chad Dembisky (7-3) got the victory in 6 2/3 innings of work.
The Lions (21-13) are idle until they play at St. Mary’s April 5.
